Stranger things 3 the game review

This adventure game blends a distinctively retro bit art style with modern gameplay mechanics to deliver nostalgic fun with a fresh new twist.

The creatively named Stranger Things 3: The Game is an action-adventure beat-'em-up where you play through the events of the third season of Stranger Things. This game really is one giant spoiler for the show. When I write "play through the events of" I mean quite literally that there are lines and scenes that unfold exactly as they do in season three. As a result, I wouldn't recommend playing this if you haven't finished the third season, or if you plan on watching it anytime soon so as not to spoil it for yourself. However, if you don't really care for watching the show but still want to know what happens, then perhaps you're the person the game is aimed at, because, to be quite honest, you'd have a lot more fun if you just watched Stranger Things. The game has you exploring the not-so-peaceful country town of Hawkins, completing quests, solving puzzles and uncovering the secrets it has to hide.

Stranger Things 3: The Game is a note-for-note retelling of Stranger Things season three, released day and date with the popular Netflix series. This is a little ironic since the show is set in , just before the Nintendo Entertainment System debuted in select markets in the U. Namely, it goes on a little too long and follows the source material a little too closely. Sttranger Things 3: The Game ST3 is a cooperative brawler featuring most of the cast of the hit Netflix show, and follows their adventures as they face off against yet another eldritch monstrosity turning their peaceful midwest town into a realm of nightmares. The game takes place from an isometric viewpoint which works well with the brawler-style gameplay. Each character has a different attack and special ability based on their appearance and actions in the show. Co-op is handled very well, with a second player able to join at any time simply by turning on a second controller. Each player gets half the screen, and you can explore freely in different directions if you want to. Even better, dropping out is just as easy, and AI takes over seamlessly if the second player wants to quit. When you start the game you only have access to a few of the cast, but as the story progresses up to 12 characters can be unlocked. Each character has their own special ability, and several of these can be used to aid in traversal or gain access to hidden secrets. These range from an upgraded wallet and the classic nail bat to more exotic items such as a Wonder Woman costume or a belching contest trophy. The trinkets each affect different sets of characters, and it helps to consider whether your current party is composed of kids, adults, males, or female heroes and adjust your equipment accordingly. The most powerful and difficult to craft trinkets only affect a single character, but these usually offer a much greater benefit to offset their lessened utility. The developers even threw in a Smash Bros.

Though its roughly 8-hour campaign has more detail than you'd get watching a recap or reading a well-written wiki summary, it should surprise no one to hear that this version lacks the same emotional punch as the show, stranger things 3 the game review. I love how its just live every movie tie in game in the 80s were it will have the movies name and then The Game after it and the fact that its 8-Bit is amazing! Stranger Things 3 : The Game.

As an old-school arcade beat-em-up with a free-flowing open world structure, its story, characters, and ideas are all tied directly to the third season of the Netflix show that inspired it, sometimes to a fault. Without going into spoiler territory, the story in Stranger Things 3: The Game feels like an abridged version of the story told throughout season 3. Though its roughly 8-hour campaign has more detail than you'd get watching a recap or reading a well-written wiki summary, it should surprise no one to hear that this version lacks the same emotional punch as the show. However, it does stick close enough to that script that I would strongly urge people to watch the new season before even turning it on. There's an uncanny quality to Stranger Things 3: The Game's look.

A bit callback video game is well-suited to tap that same viewership vein. In Stranger Things 3: The Game which is confusingly the second Stranger Things game , you control the main cast from an isometric perspective to explore the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and beat up monsters and bad guys as you play through the events of the third season. The story beats are identical to those of the show, but the dialogue is truncated. Playing an adaptation like this is nostalgic in its own right, as direct video game adaptations of popular media are rare these days. I enjoyed that element, but it does nothing to expand the lore, dig deeper into the characters, or show interesting beats happening outside of the main story. The main missions are hampered by their need to hew close to the source material. I felt I was moving around in a circle as I traveled point to point with simple puzzles and enemies serving as hurdles. A handful of sidequests exist, but they tasked me with doing boring things like killing rats in a basement, delivering pizza, or finding hidden gnomes and the payoffs were disappointing. You play as two characters at all times, swapping between them whenever you want.

Laudna critical role

Stranger Things 3: The Game does its best to reward curious minds with sidequests and areas that are only accessible using specific characters, but I wouldn't necessarily say any of those non-essential missions and their rewards feel especially meaningful. The game is just It also makes it much easier to deal with ability-gated areas later on: Once you have Joyce, who carries bolt-cutters that can open chained up doors, all you have to do is walk up to a door and press A, and you will automatically switch to her and begin her time-based bolt-cutting minigame. I have played only 20 minutes yet. Co-op is handled very well, with a second player able to join at any time simply by turning on a second controller.
