Stihl ms 660

By atomicduck , January 9, in Chainsaws. I recently bought a secondhand Stihl MS, fired it up, ran it through a couple of logs and as I finished going through the last one, the idle dropped and shortly stopped all together and was unable to get it started again. I went through a number of checks, cleaned the carb ended up replacing it altogether , checked the fuel line was clear including the fuel filter, air filter looks brand new and clean, spark plug is firing nicely, spark plug gap is spot on, tried a new spark plug altogether as well. Upon doing so, the cylinder looked a little scored and the piston was mostly black so I ordered an aftermarket replacement kit. I then went to try and start it again, this time it wouldn't start. If I pull relatively softly, it will pull as it normally should and I can feel the piston moving. If I give it a harder pull, i. As soon as I press the decompression valve down again, the piston can freely move, until I pull hard again. Does anyone have any ideas at why it is doing this? I took the head off again just to check I had installed everything correctly and to check nothing in fact had broken off inside the engine and it's all fine, piston rings are intact and in position, the little clips holding the piston in place are also intact and in position, the piston arrow is facing the exhaust port, presuming that is correct and nothing looks scored, really bizarre.

Ask where he bought it. Fortunately I have repaired many saws in the way I have described.

Due to compression pressure, jerky stresses occur when starting internal combustion engines. The damping element in the ElastoStart special starter grip alternately absorbs and releases force according to the compression pattern.

Earlier models may not have the exact features that later models do. IntelliCarb Compensating Carburetor: Adjusts the air-to-fuel ratio automatically, ensuring the engine maintains optimal performance even as the air filter becomes clogged, compensating for reduced airflow. Decompression Valve: Aids in starting the chainsaw by reducing the compression in the cylinder, making the pull-start significantly easier. This means less effort is required to start the engine. Fuel and Oil Caps with Retainers: These caps ensure a tight seal to prevent leaks while their retainers keep the caps attached to the chainsaw, preventing loss or misplacement during refueling or maintenance.

With a The MS is well-regarded by users for its high-quality construction, efficient lubrication, and anti-vibration systems, and relatively easy starting compared to other professional-grade chainsaws. However, some users have reported some difficulties with starting in cold weather and a higher maintenance requirement compared to other models. Several versions of the Stihl MS chainsaw are available on the market, each designed for different purposes and tasks. Some of the most common versions include:.

I did try honing the original cylinder, placed it back on but had no luck there. Thanks, Chris. Cast Iron Cookware Latest: djg james 19 minutes ago. MS Very powerful, extremely fast-cutting professional chainsaw General. They are a niche saw for the true professional. Would it be possible for an aftermarket part to create too much compression, hence the decompression valve closing too early? The wevsite does say "no recommended to build a complete saw" they advertise it as a complete repair kit. STIHL reserves the right to make changes to technical specifications and equipment. Bought an years ago that was pretty beat, but was of the golden age of 7. Similarly, I once got a XP in with Time to upgrade! A couple of cuts would be enough time for the bar and chain to heat up, and if you have a chain with burred drivers where it may have flown off previous then this can jam in the bar and stall the saw. You can change the operation from summer to winter mode in just one simple step. The decompression valve makes it easier to start your power tool. You have a big smile on your face and say "lets rock"! Jan 22, ZeroJunk. Milling is about the harshest chaw one can give a saw, it may look cosmetically great as it sat on the end of a mill, but could have been through hell cutting long prolonged ripping cuts. I tried to do a compression test and discovered my tester is faulty, but a new one is in the post so will give that a try as well.
