I never tire of that story. Growing up in an aviation family, I have heard endless cool stories but few so cool. One of my favorites was when my grandfather was flying when the F15 was in early flight development. The skies were much less busy, and there was a bit less formality. The two pilots were close enough to exchange waves, and moments later the F15 rocketed away.

I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed. Moments later,a Twin Beech required the same. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison. The SR71 requested flight level For those unfamiliar with the terminology, add two zeros to the end of the flight level to get the altitude in feet. That story is often told but is generally considered apocryphal. There is too much wrong with it procedurally. It's funny, but not likely a conversation that actually happened. I thought it was apocryphal as well, but this is the pilot who did it. That video is not a one-off. I'm sure he wouldn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Dont under estimate what the military get up to. The MK1 Lynx helicopter Westland Lynx didnt have a black box flight recorder, and as it had the world speed record, many pilots when entertaining new recruits would attempt to scare the wotsit out of them by flying over the mountain tops of Wales before nose diving the chopper towards the valley floor to see how fast they could get it to go. On a par with flying with The Blades who are ex Red Arrow pilots.

So it comes as no surprise if, thanks to its astonishing flight characteristics, the aircraft has set numerous speed and altitude records throughout its career. People often asked us if, because of this fact, it was fun to fly the jet. Fun would not be the first word I would use to describe flying this plane—intense, maybe, even cerebral. We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we entered Los Angeles airspace. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my back-seater.
The SR was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A reconnaissance aircraft during the s by Lockheed's Skunk Works division. American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the aircraft's innovative concepts. Initially, a bomber variant of the A was requested by Curtis LeMay , before the program was focused solely on reconnaissance. The SR was longer and heavier than the A, allowing it to hold more fuel as well as a two-seat cockpit. NASA was the final operator of the Blackbird, using it as a research platform; it was retired again in Mission equipment for the plane's aerial reconnaissance role included signals intelligence sensors, side looking airborne radar , and a camera.

Turns out part of the movie is based on a real historical time period where Polynesian people stopped sailing long distances to colonize new areas. As my hand instinctively reached for the mic button, I had to remind myself that Walt was in control of the radios. There is no sign of any activity. A bored radio operator on yet another training flight could easily be listening into civilian radio traffic. We reach our target altitude and speed, with five miles to spare. Feb 13 at AM. Before Center could reply, I'm thinking to myself, hey, Dusty 52 has a ground speed indicator in that million-dollar cockpit, so why is he asking Center for a readout? He had dementia and passed away a few months later after a life in civil aviation. Hacker News new past comments ask show jobs submit. I pulled the throttles to idle just south of Sicily, but we still overran the refueling tanker awaiting us over Gibraltar.

Yeah, heat expansion made it airtight at Mach 3, but sitting on a runway with its parts contracted back to normal dimensions, it had leaks. CPLX on Sept 1, parent prev next [—]. Just moments after the Cessna's inquiry, a Twin Beech piped up on frequency, in a rather superior tone, asking for his ground speed. We are approaching a turn, and this is good. It was the fastest we would ever fly.
