While on an extraction mission to bring back comrade Liang Liang, a spy who has vital information concerning the US army, Liu and his squad felt into a trap laid by a group of US snipers. John, a sharpshooter himself, has been tracking the Fifth Squad for months with his fellow snipers in the hope of capturing their leader Liu, the Grim Reaper alive, as an order from his commander officer Williams. The Chinese, on the other hand, will stop at nothing to rescue their intelligence agent. While one side is trying to outsmart the other, a young North Korean village boy turns up to further complicate the grave situation as he is also trying to save agent Liang. Besides being educated in the US, Zhang Mo had worked with her father before as an assistant director and editor. Interestingly, Chen Yu's screenplay gives the American snipers, led by John Jonathan Kos-Read a fair share of screen time and portraying them as fairly humans and not just the typical arrogant foreign enemies.

Then a young North Korean boy who knows the Korean-speaking Liangliang unexpectedly arrives on the scene to bring his body back to the village. To the surprise of the Chinese, Liangliang turns out to be still alive and the injection brings him round. But the remaining members of Fifth Squad are already low on ammunition, and there are still six US snipers on the high ground opposite. Shot in northeast China in early , it was originally to have been released on 30 Jul that year, just prior to Army Day. It seems likely she was specially involved in the English-language scenes with the US snipers, and thus given a co-directing credit. Whatever the case, Snipers is the first Mainland film to make a western enemy at least half-credible and with fairly natural dialogue — at least until the the maniacal finale where the usual stereotypes reassert themselves.

Relatively contained and short on visual flourishes, it wears its patriotic heart on its blood-splattered sleeve while delivering bursts of action with brisk proficiency. Surprisingly, given his status, this is the first Zhang film to be released during the Lunar New Year period. This differentiation should enable Snipers to stealthily gain traction once the box office fireworks of its ostensible rival begin to fade. They find their comrade in the middle of the freezing battlefield where he has seemingly been left for dead, only to realise that his body has been placed there as bait. A fierce battle of wits ensues, with the hemmed-in Chinese soldiers outmanned, outgunned, and lacking the field equipment of their enemy — the squad only has one pair of binoculars. On the other hand, rendered as someone who abuses his power and is offensive, their Captain, Williams Andrew Donnelly is just the opposite; a classic example of someone who gets what is coming before the end credits rolls. Occasional off-screen narration that explains what is going on could have been dispensed with, not least because it signals that at least one Chinese survived the encounter.
