Upon completion of the quest you recieve the achievement of the same name. Upon entering Arkngthamz you will begin hearing a voice saying to turn back. Rumbling and groaning from minor earth shifts will happen spilling minor dirt up from time to time as well as large chunks of rock falling from the ceiling to the water in the chasm below. When you enter the first main cavern the spirit of Katria will greet you and say how foolhardy you are to enter this place. Accept her assistance to journey deeper and you will begin Lost to the Ages as a quest proper.

The quest details the investigation of a lost ancient Dwemer secret and the search for four pieces of solid Aetherium. It can be started by locating and reading a copy of the book The Aetherium Wars. It can also be started by entering Arkngthamz and talking to Katria , skipping directly to the second part of the quest. In Arkngthamz, I met Katria, the ghost of an adventurer who perished there. She offered to join me in my fight to the summit, and I accepted her help. Upon arriving at Arkngthamz, the earth will quiver, followed by a disembodied voice that can be heard warning the Dragonborn to turn back. When continuing through the ruin, the disembodied voice will be given a name — a female Nord named Katria who will reveal that she is on the quest to find the mythical Aetherium Forge. She reveals that she died during an earthquake in the Dwemer ruin. Katria's Journal can be found on her body. In it, she expresses her displeasure that her former colleague, Taron Dreth the author of The Aetherium Wars stole her research to publish the book, but she insists that she alone has the leads for the locations of Aetherium and possibly where the Forge may be located. The ethereal Katria aids the Dragonborn in retrieving the first of the four aetherium shards needed to unlock the Forge, and thus the quest "Lost to the Ages" begins, with the task of finding the Aetherium shards.

In ancient times, the Dwemer constructed four city-states led by the great research center of Arkngthamz in the Reach. Their purpose remains unknown, but the city-states were undefeatable and held their ground against attacking Nords for centuries. Then, in the midst of the First Era, all four city-states suddenly collapsed within three years. The Nords ascribed the destruction of the cities to the strategic genius of High-King Gellir , but many scholars suggested that the cities fell for other reasons—although the mystery was buried along with the cities and merely forgotten. The Aetherium Wars is a tome written in the present day by Taron Dreth which details the fall of the four cities and even offers an explanation for the downfall of the Dwarves: namely, Aetherium, an ultra-rare crystal-like matter with a strong, magical aura.

This mission is activated by finding and reading a copy of The Atherian Wars. There are many copies, one of which can be found in the Arcaneum at the College of Winterhold. The mission's initial marker will be at Arkngthamz , which is located in the remote mountainous area southeast of Markarth. Beware of a small group of bandits that usually hang out on the mountain near the site. Enter the massive ruins. As you advance, a woman's voice will warn you to turn back. Tremors will rock the structure as you ignore the warning; and, near the chasm, the ghost of Katria will approach. She isn't hostile, so don't attack her. She believes that you are just another misguided treasure hunter who, like her, won't survive if you persist in this task.

Sometime after 1E 22, the Dwemer of Skyrim discovered a considerable source of raw Aetherium in Blackreach. The first Aetherium Shard is located in the final room of Arkngthamz. The Dwemer Ruin is found south-east of Markarth, in the Reach. The third Aetherium Shard is located in the Storage Room of Mzulft, which is found if you turn to the West before you enter the Dwemer ruin. I believe it has a high level lock guarding the entrance door. Mzulft is located to the far west of Skyrim, north-west of Riften. The fourth Aetherium Shard is in Raldthbar, a massive and complex Dwemer ruin located slightly south-west of Windhelm.

Go through the open wall on your right to find an Apprentice locked chest with random levelled loot. Adding Zephyr to this dungeon is a clever way to give you a bow for this part of the quest. An excited Katria will rush up to you and yell: "I Fight off Dwemer spiders, Dwemer spider guardians, and warped Dwemer spiders. That this is the real Aetherium Forge. Anyone know where "Phantom form" shout is located? Each time you hit an incorrect Resonator, a new trap will trigger and cause mayhem, resetting all Resonators in the process. Another way to solve it may be to quit the game and reload a save at or prior to arriving at the locks, especially if each lock does not emit the gong sound when triggered.
