This page lists all the ammunition arrows for bows and bolts for crossbows available in Skyrim. Arrows are the required ammunition for bows. Arrows cannot be enchanted or tempered.

Now you can access their standard gear, if you give them arrows there it should make them use them. I have experimented with this quite a bit, since reading about it, and have found that I can have them doing a lot of damage, if I keep them using iron arrows and an Elven bow, rather than having them default to a plain old hunting bow, because I tried to give them Elven arrows.
