There were ribbon ties flowing from voluminous sleeves, lace and net dresses trimmed with goat fur, a gazillion black Victoriana coats, and swathes of gold tinsel-fringed grid-patterned netting to layer on top of tailoring at will. This collection was marked by the volume and drama that Simone Rocha has come to be known for. Silhouettes swung from the grand and sculpted to the lean and loud. There were big, sweeping black tulle dresses, some with long flowing ribbons or bows, others with dark sparkles, all of them fit for a Dickens-ian funeral, while jackets had big leg of mutton style sleeves and jutting frills at the shoulder. One came in tartan with streaming black ribbons and others were made from a patchwork of printed silk with little frills on the seams. Pointy-toed shoes with contrast soles added a frisson of rebellion. After taking a girlish turn for spring with a collection inspired by china dolls and featuring some tricky proportions, Rocha is certainly back where she belongs, exploring the shadows — and roughing history up a bit. Milan fashion week kicked off a night earlier than usual this season. In an era of mega fashion collaborations, this is the mega-est, with a designer roster that includes Pierpaolo Piccioli, Simone Rocha, and Craig Green, among others. The Gamme Rouge and Gamme Bleu shows, with collections designed by Giambattista Valli and Thom Browne respectively, tended to come off as expensive branding exercises: entertaining to attend, but not necessarily reliable sources of viable outerwear anywhere near the level of the main range. Moncler is a kind of winter uniform in certain precincts, a status symbol that earned its status thanks in part to its functionality, but also to its coding—that red, white, and blue rooster logo patch is an effective means of messaging. The logistics were far from perfect, but there was a tingle in the air; here was someone or someones doing something different in a city long critiqued for playing it by the rules. It was like stepping into a chapel, with canvases by the artist-monk Sidival Fila hanging on the walls; and on the mannequins, A-line puffer capes, capelets, and skirts designed, Piccioli said, to evoke the Madonna. Evocative of life rafts and space suits, his pieces were the most conceptual of the lot.

It's hard to name many other designers who are quite as in sync as Simone Rocha is with the bold, daring, experimental direction that British designers are traveling in. The flats—and the rest of the opulent collection, for that matter—prove that the maximalist look will still be going strong come fall.
