Heavy strings can cause too much tension on the top which may cause irreversible damage.

I have a lot of playing coming up, in terms of recording and gigs. Well boy, was I surprised when I finally did. They are really great! But perhaps I should explain my trepidation. Some years ago I was busking in a corner of Washington Square Park when a person rewarded my efforts by tossing a famous brand of silk and steel strings into my open guitar case, saying they were "very mellow" and perfect for folk music. Unfortunately, I found them to be mushy, dull and undefined. Perhaps they were supposed to make a steel string guitar sound more like a nylon string guitar. To my ear they sounded dead as a doornail right out of the box and went down hill from there. Other silk and steels sounded the same. I could not have been more wrong.

I'm not sure which brand to try as there are a few different ones that claim to be great. Can anybody recommend me a set to use that has nice elasticity to the strings and are stiff at all? I'd like to be able to play the acoustic effortlessly like I do my electric. The ultimate and most expensive is probably Thomastik-Infeld Plectrums. John Pearse and GHS are both excellent. I find that silk and bronze are warmer. And they are softer than bronze strings.

Lighter Easier to fret important for beginners and to bend Better resonance under a lighter touch, common when first starting out. Heavier Bigger sound - provide more volume and resonance Better tuning stability - stays in tune longer. While string gauge is very much a matter of personal preference based on tone and feel, most manufacturers recommend string gauge based on body size.

Because of their sound characteristics and their feel, they are often used for fingerstyle playing. Genres like Gypsy Jazz and Folk work well with silk and steel strings. I think they can work for fingerstyle blues too. Not the best for rock, country or anything that requires a lot of strumming and flat-picking in my opinion. Silk and steel strings are a great option for beginners because they are softer on the fingers.
