In the Pilot , Kash is shown to be having an affair with year-old Ian Gallagher, despite being married with children. During Three Boys , Lip finds out about his relationship with Ian. When his wife Linda discovers Kash's sexuality, she is upset and Kash worries she'll tell his mother. However, she allows the affair to continue, so long as he gives her another child.

Ian Gallagher was one of the most popular characters on Shameless , and while he wasn't the most problematic of the Gallagher kids, he's far from flawless. While Frank's kids aren't quite as problematic as their father, they still get into all sorts of trouble that keeps their character arcs interesting and the audience on the edge of their seats. This includes Ian, who was one of the few Gallagher kids who grew up to become somewhat successful. However, there were also several things Ian Gallagher did wrong throughout the show. He is the son of Monica Gallagher and Gary Bennett , but was brought up under Frank Gallagher 's fatherhood like the rest of his siblings. In Series 1 he worked at the Karib's Shop and later at The Jockey as a barman but in more recent series his employment, if he has any, has not been shown. Ian left the Chatsworth Estate very suddenly, at the end of Series 7 he stowed away in Joe Pritchard 's car when he was driving to his new life with a harassed looking Karen Maguire. Karen was having second thoughts, and realizing she still had feeling for her husband Jamie she tried to talk Joe into taking her back. Joe reacted violently and Ian came to Karen's rescue, but he hit Joe too hard and killed him. Leaving a shocked Karen behind, he drove off in Joe's car with its owner in the boot, with the promise of sorting everything out. He hasn't been seen and has rarely been mentioned on the Chatsworth Estate since. Ian is depicted as closest to his brother Lip , with whom he shares a room, and whom is initially the only member of his family to know that he was gay.

Ian Clayton Gallagher was born in in Illinois, and is often the most strong-hearted, persistent, and goofy -yet currently reckless- third oldest child in the Gallagher family. Ian has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder; he currently refuses to visit the doctor and does not believe he needs to take medication. For these reasons his behavior has been erratic and out of control, worrying his family. He is a high school drop out, having left his education behind when he illegally enlisted in the army at the end of Season 3. While in the army, Ian attempted to steal a helicopter, and was a wanted criminal on at least two charges: attempted theft of government property and impersonating his older brother, Phillip Gallagher. He has been in an on-again-off-again relationship with the aggressive neighborhood thug, Mickey Milkovich , and was best friends with Mickey's sister, Mandy Milkovich ; he has complete hatred for Mandy's abusive boyfriend, Kenyatta , with whom she moved away to Indiana in Season 5. He helped around the house and assisted Mickey and Svetlana with the care of their son Yevgeny. After spiraling out of control, Ian becomes a religious fanatic in Season 8 and is arrested. During Season 9 , Ian is sent to prison to serve a two-year sentence, where he is reunited with Mickey Milkovich and his character was temporarily retired from the series, making an appearance in the season finale before Fiona leaves. They race on the way down to the prisoner, shivs in hand. Ian spent most of Shameless' eighth season trying to help his ex Trevor launch a new youth shelter for teenagers. While Ian was busy being a miracle worker, he stopped taking his bipolar medication as he said it held back his creative potential.
