I understand that the stone structure should include an insulating layer on the inside facing the fire. My question finally is; are aerated building blocks suitable for this? They do seem to have insulating properties, but I have no idea whether they would be suitable for the heat produced by a firepit. I attach a picture of the blocks here. I'll try and get further details of the product, but generally, are aerated blocks suitable for this purpose? Not an expert in this field but I am inclined to say no. Not entirely sure the type of blocks you have there but I suspect if these are the "softish" concrete blocks they will crack with the heat produced- more likely given they are aerated.
