Vic Brotherson is who I call if I'm feeling happy or blue, guilty or grateful. Or flirty. Or just because it's Friday. Because she is an artist, who's medium is flowers - and because she has magic hands.

I left university with a degree in fine art. Wild at Heart, a florist in Westbourne Grove, had just opened around the corner from the antiques shop my mother worked in. Decked out in my dungarees, hippy beads and DMs, I went in and asked the owner, Nikki Tibbles, for a job. She threw me over a money pouch; I ended up staying 14 years. I grew up in Cumbria, so I already had a love of nature — not just flowers, specifically.

We had to make hundreds of bouquets and a gust of wind could blow the whole stand over. One of those passers-by on his daily bus ride to work was an advertising director named Simon Brotherson. He orchestrated a meeting with Vic, which eventually led to their getting married. The thought of owning her own flower shop had been with her for some time.
