The series follows the 3rd Street Saints, a fictional street gang originally operating out of the Saints Row district, hence the series' title. Gameplay in the Saints Row games focuses on an open world where the player can complete missions to progress an overall story, as well as engage in various side activities. Most of the gameplay revolves around driving and shooting, with occasional role-playing elements. Due to early entries being labeled as Grand Theft Auto clones , the developers sought to create a more distinctive experience from the third game onwards, with a heavy focus on over-the-top gameplay, popular culture homages, parodies, and self-referential humor ; these changes have been controversial among fans of the first two games. The first four games in the Saints Row series were set primarily in two fictional locales—Stilwater and Steelport—which are loosely based on real American cities. The games center on an initially unnamed player-created character later nicknamed "the Boss" who joins the 3rd Street Saints by chance and helps them defeat enemy gangs in citywide turf wars. Later in the sequels, the player becomes the gang's leader, a celebrity and pop culture icon, and eventually president of the United States , while facing more powerful enemies, such as a major corporation, an anti-gang paramilitary , and an alien empire. The game was released in August The sequel, Saints Row 2 , was released in October As of September , the series has had sales in excess of 13 million, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all-time. Saints Row is an action-adventure game developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver. Set within the fictional city of Santo Ileso, loosely based on Las Vegas , the single-player story follows a group of four friends who start their own outlaw gang called the Saints, which they subsequently expand by seizing power from other criminal organizations in the city. The game is played from a third-person view and its open world is navigated on-foot or by vehicle. Players can fight enemies using a variety of firearms and other tools, and call in non-playable gang members to assist them. Similarly to previous Saints Row titles, players control the gang's leader, nicknamed "the Boss", who features highly customizable traits. Outside of the main story, players can freely explore Santo Illeso and engage in several different side activities.

The superpowers have been scrapped and the sex toys have been safely stowed back in the sock drawer — the new Saints Row has shed its shark-jumping silliness and smutty tendencies in favour of a return to its open-world gangland roots. But in between these peaks is a relentless rinse-and-repeat cycle of wave-based shootouts against a handful of rival gangs that are uniformly bullet spongy and largely indistinguishable from one another. The only ones that really stand out are the garish, neon-soaked Idols who appear to have grown restless waiting for Ubisoft to announce a new Watch Dogs. The combat itself is snappy and serviceable, and in the absence of a proper cover system is heavy on circle-strafing and pulling off occasional execution moves in order to replenish your health mid-fight. By the time I had fully leveled up my character I had access to everything from flaming punches to the ability to shoot through walls, but rarely did I feel the need to use them in favour of the more traditional skills like throwing grenades and activating temporary armour which made for a mostly conventional brand of firefights. Though there are a handful of aircraft and boats to discover, most of my time in Santo Ileso was spent behind the wheel of a healthy fleet of land vehicles, from motorbikes to monster trucks and everything in between. The floaty and largely homogenized handling meant that I never really grew to favour any one vehicle over the other aside from the glorious hoverbike unlocked late in the story , but the ability to drift and sideswipe other cars at the tap of a button does give chase sequences a welcome burst of Burnout -style gratification. None of these partners in crime have particularly interesting personalities, but the one I warmed to the most by far was the brainy pacifist, Eli, mainly because his side story missions involved donning some cardboard armour and swapping my assault rifle for a Nerf gun in a series of live-action role-playing battles.
