Even if you've never used Reddit , you've no doubt heard of it; it's one of the largest sites in the US , and with more than 2 million "subreddits," it has a stunning depth and breadth of content. With all that activity, it's not surprising that Reddit has become a hub for digital piracy , and the site has struggled with managing copyright violations for several years. With more than , members, it was created in with the mission of being "a community dedicated to the discussion of digital piracy," according to its own description. That you can find discussions of the vulnerabilities of piracy laws on Reddit is unsurprising. Given the subject matter, the piracy subreddit attempts to thread a particularly precarious needle.

It seems like rights holders have realized that carpet bombing is a cheap and "effective" strategy. This strategy appears to be having a chilling effect across multiple platforms. Copyright claims are super easy to make at scale, but the platforms themselves cannot investigate at scale, meaning the small guy suffers. Yes, redditers who are truly infringing should have their posts removed, but the result of trigger-happy, likely bot controled complaints is having an effect on legal speech. After the new EU copyright directive passed parliament, I went on a bit of a hunt for reasons. Outside Germany, we simply didn't get traction for protest. And one reason people gave was "it won't be enforcable anyhow". This here clearly shows what Germans have known for years thanks to our stupid "Abmahnwesen" legal abnormality: enforcement is not the bottleneck when private entities sue other private entities. And there's equally no reason to believe those will be spared by the copyright industry and their lawyers. I consider it an unfortunate attitude that breeds cynicism and allows laws to be passed that simply express a desire, rather than laws that might make things better. I understand there can be protest exhaustion and one has to pick one's battles.

Film studios that filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against a cable Internet provider are trying to force Reddit to identify users who posted comments about piracy. In an attempt to prove that RCN turned a blind eye to users downloading copyrighted movies, the plaintiffs sent a subpoena to Reddit last month seeking identifying information for nine users. Reddit's response provided at least some information about one user but no information on any of the other eight. According to the film studios, Reddit argued that "the requests for identifying information associated with the additional eight accounts are more in the nature of a fishing expedition and are neither relevant nor permissible under the First Amendment. Now, the studios want a federal court to force Reddit's hand. The latest filing and the ongoing dispute over the subpoena were detailed in a TorrentFreak article published Saturday. The Reddit users' comments allegedly "establish that RCN has not reasonably implemented a policy for terminating repeat infringers," that "RCN controls the conduct of its subscribers and monitors its subscribers' access," and "establish that the ability to freely pirate without consequence was a draw to becoming a subscriber of RCN. For example, the filmmakers want to identify Reddit user ChikaraFan because the user once wrote that "RCN seems fairly lax I looked up before I switched and had little trouble.

There seriously should be a law against such "carpet bombing". But it's not Internet culture and there should be more uniform condemnation and outrage from the traditionally marginalized communities who took to the Internet earlier, rather than mental gymnastics justifying how censorship is great when it's deployed against today's undesirables. In fact, once something enters the public domain, copying it, consuming it, drawing attention to it, documenting it, analysing it, archiving it, reusing it, in short, using it; is absolutely vital to keep those facets of culture a part of our heritage. I was younger and spent a lot of read: too much time on 4chan back then. As far as pure numbers are concerned that's a decent recovery. This is oftentimes a clone of the original awesome piracy repo. License CC It's not an effective swap in many cases, but it's advantages are currently vastly outweighing the disadvantages. The DMCA is not draconian, and in fact is a pretty even handed law. The latter is what I take issue with. I'm sorry about that - I just like making lists. Now, those early actions have swelled up into multiple bans across similar subreddits, marking a new push by the platform to rid itself of copyright-violating users. Thanks to a series of copyright cases recently filed in the United States, companies now have greater leverage when it comes to taking action against repeat offenders.

Music Automation. I could rephrase your statement as " Content Discovery. Last commit date. Piracy: permissionless copying, extending, including, remixing, transforming, retelling, inspiring; is culture. I mean, this is not just true, but even more clearly so when you look at things beyond the fairly niche and not legally sanctioned 'piracy' scene. That probably wouldn't work for Reddit. Tracker Proxies. Mind you this is the kind of book I buy, even in ePub format. The middle-men are the most desperate about tyrannical copyright laws. I mean, banning watch-people-die is obviously because they are trying to be somehow attracting more advertisers, being more profit-friendly, but they never condoned copyright infringement as far as I know.
