Before I go any further, let me provide a bit of background information.

For many years, Ravelry has dominated the knitting pattern marketplace. Even now, there is nothing quite like it out there, which has led many knitting pattern designers, including myself, to believe that you only need to sell your knitting patterns there. Despite that, I now believe that Ravelry should not be your online shop. This was perfectly illustrated this summer when Ravelry made big changes to the design of the site. This redesign resulted in tons of people being unable to go on the website without experiencing significant side effects.

I belong to a few Facebook knitting groups. In short, these Facebook groups are part of my knitting community. And, I love it. I am in these groups as me — Linda Cooper but I make no secret of the fact that I am a knitwear designer. I post works-in-progress, stitch patterns which are made available via my stitch library and my finished designs. Knitters often ask for my finished patterns and I direct them to my page on Ravelry LindaCooper MainlyCardigans Ravelry Store where they will find them. In the coming months, I will add four new cardigan patterns to my store beginning with Charcoal Rose and Irish Rose; with the former being added within a week and the latter by the beginning of next month. Which, in a roundabout way leads me to test knitters and errata. At some point soon, I do want to add a shop facility so you can get Mainly Cardigans knitwear direct. Test knitters are very important people. They undertake to knit the cardigan pattern in the size they choose and alert the designer to any problems they come across while knitting. In doing so, they allow designers to ensure patterns are readable, clear, easy to follow and iron out potential problems or errors. Test knitters will be sent via email a copy of the pattern they wish to knit.

You have designed, written and tested your pattern. But how do you get your knitting patterns on Ravelry? Publishing a pattern on Ravelry is actually very simple. To do that, hover over My Notebook and click on Contributions in the drop-down menu. Then, next to the bit that says Add a pattern to Ravelry , make sure that A pattern that I designed free or for sale is selected and then click the button saying do it. A window saying just to be completely sure… will pop up, but just click on the button in the bottom right saying add this pattern to Ravelry.

Yarn shops are so important to Ravelry, and we love to help connect Ravelers with local shops! Here are some things you can do to use Ravelry more effectively. Listing your shop is free! Please search our LYS directory to see if your shop is already listed. With Ravelry In-Store Pattern Sales, participating LYSOs can search for patterns available through this service and sell them to customers through their shops, printing the pattern for the customer in-store if desired. Patterns can also be emailed to the customer and saved in their Ravelry library. At the end of each month, shop owners receive a combined invoice for all the patterns sold during that month, and pay for them through the invoices section of their Ravelry Pro accounts via PayPal or a credit card. There are no Ravelry fees to shops for this service!

Once your pattern is published, you can send requests to your test knitters to show their photos on the pattern page too, which helps to show the design in different sizes, yarns and colourways. Once you have verified the details, you can now add the PDF to your Ravelry store for sale.
