We have been working our way through a wide variety of phonics based readers here at our house, as we complete our first year of homeschooling. The goal for this year has been to get Alice reading. Firstly, I should mention that we send our kids to a local kindergarten, where they use the Letterland program to teach phonemic awareness. We love Letterland! I do recommend the basic alphabet learning though — we purchased a CD with the songs and the kindergarten provides colouring in sheets and activities. Each letter has a little story to help children learn the sound, and they are really very clever. I highly recommend them, although we have completed the lessons out of order, choosing to generally follow the order of phonics introduction that Explode the Code uses. The first books I purchased and have used a whole heap are the Bob books. I did find them extremely useful, affordable, and basic. We own the Set One pack and First Stories , both of which cover CVC words in an extremely basic, accessible way, and begin to introduce a few blends towards the final books. The appeal with Bob books is that they are so decidedly simple that a child can read themselves a book within a few days of beginning CVC words — once children are reading at higher levels, the Bob books can seem too babyish, with their simple illustrations and tiny size. These are an Australian resource, which can be paired with workbooks. The activities are written to support the readers, rather than to generically teach children to apply the skill to any text. They also progress rather quickly, with the first set covering far more than the CVC words that I was expecting.

Our Alphabetti books are a work in progress. After being out of production for a while when Miz Katz N. Ratz was working on another book , the books are now back into production and will be produced at the rate of one book per week. Most children learn the alphabet first, and then are taught to read and write. Our Alphabetti method takes a different approach: we teach the alphabet one letter at a time, and then immediately immerse a child in the USE of that letter by having the child read and write words using the letter.

F inally, I am proud to present the first of the all-new Alphabetti books. This way, a child doesn't have to spend months memorizing the entire alphabet before learning how to use it. The old Alphabetti books used a different system that, unfortunately, started with some of the harder-to-learn letters. I did not know this at the time. Also helps develop the muscles and motor skills necessary for handwriting which is taught later. I found an almost complete set of Oxford Reading Tree books sometimes called Biff, Chip and Kipper books, after the main characters secondhand. I cannot speak to the lower levels that introduce CVC words, as I found this stage a really easy one to cover from a less expensive and more accessible source.
