Hi, we've just had a merbau deck built. Interested in thoughts on how soon we should oil it. From what I've read, it seems it's best to let it weather for about weeks before oiling. The deck is exposed and north facing, so gets lots of sun. Not sure of that's a factor in oiling sooner? You are correct 6 to 8 weeks of full sun to weather a new deck.

Installing timber decking takes careful planning. However, if you want to make the job easier, you should choose to install pre-oiled decking. Really, what more could you ask for? Basically, you select from our range of timber products, the timber is then pre-oiled by machine in the warehouse, stacked and wrapped and delivered to your home ready to install. Everything about pre-oiled decking makes sense, but many people still choose to do it the hard way. Will it last as long without proper protection? Those areas of your decking end up being permanently unsealed which can create issues down the track and, more than likely, will reduce the life of your deck. Exposing unsealed timber decking to the rain and sun will deteriorate your timber boards faster than anything. You need to ensure that every external part of your timber decking is sealed to save the boards from decaying. Rain is not the only moisture that can get into your timber decking. Both heat and the rain can create a build up of moisture under your boards. That moisture can slowly seep into the unprotected underside of the timber and can create long-term damage. Whether you choose to install your deck or hire someone to do the job for you, pre-oiling your timber will save time and money.

There is nothing quite as Australian as the great outdoors. Living in this incredible country, we have all had the pleasure of sunny afternoons and warm nights spent with friends and family out in the yard. Our diverse climate, which ranges from tropical to dry, has created the perfect atmosphere for the archetypical barbeque for which we are so well known. Even today, Australia has stayed true to its roots and continues this tradition with no signs of letting up. Decking has been the perfect, most versatile platform for Australians to pass the time for decades.
I've bought some pre-oiled merbau decking wood to build an outdoor tabletop. I plan to cut it to size, drill it where required, then oil it before screwing it all together. I'm confused if the pre-oiled merbau still needs to be weathered, and if so, how do I do it bearing in mind hot weather for the next few weeks? See most helpful response. Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's awesome to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about weathering pre-oiled Merbau deking. Weathering is a process where your pre-oiled panels are literally exposed to the weather. Another term used is "seasoning", which allows the timber to remove excess oil and tannins. A newly installed deck for example is usually allowed to season anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks depending on the weather. It sounds like an interesting project.

A beautiful hardwood timber species deriving from a few locations around the world, merbau comes from the Kwila tree. The species is found in tropical climates in locations such as Queensland, Australia and Indo Pacific islands like Fiji, and Samoa, as well as Tanzania, India, and Madagascar. Merbau is used mainly for flooring, decking, marine construction, outdoor furniture, music instruments, and more. This hardwood is popular for its unique beauty, often compared to that of jarrah.
