There was something comforting to me, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, seeing several patrons of Pizza Villa on Congress Street in Portland drinking Budweiser out of a bottle with their pies. It was a pizza and beer moment at its finest, full of nostalgia for me. Before mainstream America pizza was wood-fired or had truffle-infused crust, it was best served with a Bud in a bar. Or maybe a Miller High Life. Pizza Villa in Portland has been a local institution for more than 50 years.

The staff here is beyond accommodating to us out-of-towners who are here for an emergency hospital visit. These gentleman checked on us, made sure we were OK. Just a comfortable atmosphere.

Sam and Rob Minervino were on an afternoon break from their latest project, relaunching Pizza Villa, a year-old restaurant that they had recently bought from old friends. When the Regios brothers decided they were ready to sell Pizza Villa, they called Sam Minervino, who immediately phoned his brother Rob to see if he would be interested in partnering with him. Pizza Villa in Portland has been a local institution for more than 50 years. Meg Minervino recalls with amusement that the first words she learned to spell were Guinness, Harp and Lite — words she saw in the giant mirrors above the bar. Sam and his wife started their family during these years. It closed in February, They are not searching for awards or recognition in national media. Nearly every Pizza Villa employee agreed to stay on — a fact that makes Rob smile. The place has salads, soups, a few pasta dishes, chicken wings and other appetizers, plus about two dozen sandwiches. My pizza had a nice crispy and rich crust, with a uniform golden color.

When I went into Pizza Villa on a recent lunch hour, I walked through the front room lined with booths and tables and picked up one of the conveniently concise menus on the counter. There was something comforting to me, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, seeing several patrons of Pizza Villa on Congress Street in Portland drinking Budweiser out of a bottle with their pies. You had to do something to entice people to come down there. Rob, just out of college, joined him. Pizza Villa in Portland has been a local institution for more than 50 years. Nearly every Pizza Villa employee agreed to stay on — a fact that makes Rob smile. It was a pizza and beer moment at its finest, full of nostalgia for me. They found an old pilates studio that had been on the market for a while, but it had nice wood floors and high ceilings. Tom Minervino studied political science and journalism, then worked as a sportswriter for a few small Maine newspapers and as a freelance writer. Why take on yet another project, especially when there is so much more competition on the restaurant scene in Portland today? Even though the Minervino brothers were trying to keep the changes to a minimum, there was still much to do. He loved the space, and the people who worked there.
