I started putting this together as a way to organize my own thoughts and understanding about the various kineticist elements and try to get a better grasp on what they're good for overall. There's a lot to chew through, you know? I share it because This is crude, slanted by my own biases, and limited to my own understanding, but it's a start, and I personally have found some interesting things along the way. First, as a bit of context to help make sense of some of what I'm saying As such, for the most part, I advocate focusing on one or the other. Air is a bit light on damage-dealing, but has lots of battlefield mobility. Even the weakest kinetic blast involves a sizable mass of elemental matter or energy, so kinetic blasts always deal full damage to swarms of any size though only area blasts deal extra damage to swarms. All of the other class features found in the core class and not mentioned among the alternate class features remain unchanged and are acquired normally when the character reaches the appropriate level unless noted otherwise.
