Past Lives is a American romantic drama film written and directed by Celine Song in her feature directorial debut. The plot is semi-autobiographical and inspired by real events from Song's life.

By David Fear. Folks off-frame are making up possible back stories. The two Koreans are tourists, one of them says, and the white guy sitting to their left is their guide. No, the other replies, the lady and the white guy are a couple, and the Korean gent is their old friend. The camera creeps toward the woman sitting between these men, as the voices keep lobbying alt-histories back and forth. The woman — her name is Nora Moon — finally looks at the camera and gives us a Mona Lisa smile. Not yet. This gently exhilarating, heartbreaking drama gives you the sense that so much of this has happened before, and will happen again.

Comedic performers taking dramatic turns have fascinated and intrigued audiences since the earliest days of motion pictures, when the likes of Charlie Chaplin earnestly turned to break the fourth wall and warned viewers of the dangers of fascism in The Great Dictator. Lee plays Nora, a semi-biographical version of the director, in a dramatic retelling of an encounter with a childhood friend decades after they separated in Korea and she is happily married in New York. Lee is masterful as a woman stuck between the life she has built with her husband Arthur John Magaro and the ghost of an unexplored romance haunting her present. A powerfully poignant tale of longing, romance, and regret, Past Lives begs the audience to find the joy and beauty in the tiny increments of love we transfer between one another, sometimes for a moment, a season, or a lifetime. The film details a three-person love story, but make no mistake; this is not a love triangle.
