Most of the big experiments are over, and designers are clearly looking to tighten up some of their more disruptive experiments — reversing a lot of suggested changes shared spell lists, for one while holding on to parts that players liked the most, one dnd playtest. But there still could be some surprises when the sourcebooks are actually released to the public.

Until then, Wizards of the Coast is releasing playtest documents to allow players to test the game piece by piece and give their feedback all the way through the process. There are some significant differences in the game's rules that will have major ramifications on the way tables play. This has given a more in-depth look at classes and mechanics than previous playtests, as well as finally revealed all twelve base classes. Their Bardic Inspiration is no longer a reaction ability tied to their proficiency bonus. Instead, the player chooses from any of the three spell lists at first level. This lets them cast almost any spell in the game, besides those specific to certain classes. It is now a half-caster, gaining spells at half the rate of other Mage classes.

These documents will be released monthly with a feedback survey opened to the public two weeks following the release of the playtest materials. I know how closely this community will be watching these playtest documents and feeling every emotion under the sun. Currently, it means that the rules will be backwards-compatible with all of the published adventures. There will hopefully be something in place to help adapt existing character options to the updated rules. Maybe me, but my crystal ball is not that clear yet. All races now explicitly specify their creature type.

Find Familiar no longer summons a normal animal. They're now mandatory in the game, and every character starts with at least one in their background. Ritual casting now applies to all casters , instead of being an exclusive feature for certain classes — we imagine many tables were running rituals like this anyway. They're also restricted by level. Indomitable provides a bonus on the rerolled saving throw equal to the fighter's level. We also got to see a new Brawler subclass, for scrappy fighters proficient in unarmed strikes and improvised weapons chairs, candelabras, beer glasses. For impatient players, the ritual spell Prayer of Healing now confers the benefits of a short rest in only 10 minutes, which feels like a brilliant boost to the spell. However, the most recent playtest document has made a huge addition to their most iconic ability. You now simply have to reuse a bonus action, make an attack roll, or force a creature to make a saving throw to continue your current Rage — which makes it less masochistic and more versatile for the player. The popular Eldritch Knight subclass, which lets you learn a few Wizard spells along the way, also lets you swap an Extra Attack with a cantrip, mixing and matching swords and spells much like the Bladesinger Wizard.

Mystic Arcanum is now a type of Eldritch Invocation that warlocks take to gain one cast of a higher-level spell per day. Bastion facilities vary from a low-level Library and Armory Level 5, when you get the Bastion for the first time to even a Teleportation Circle Level 9 or a private, unscryable demiplane Level 17 to plot your world-saving machinations in. As a result, most players go for one of the premade options. Indomitable provides a bonus on the rerolled saving throw equal to the fighter's level. Second Wind now has several uses per long rest rather than being short rest-based. The eighth playtest is where the Monk really came into its own, with the ability to deflect melee attacks as well, and greater freedom over Bonus Action abilities. If you hold a light weapon in each hand, you can now attack with both weapons as part of the same action — albeit without the damage modifier on the second roll. Grappling is much simpler, too. This lets them cast almost any spell in the game, besides those specific to certain classes. The other subclass choices are a little surprising. They're now mandatory in the game, and every character starts with at least one in their background. The Abjurer can now use spell slots to strengthen its Arcane Ward ability, too, and even casts Dispel Magic as a bonus action at higher levels, making a defensive caster feel much more active. Ah, the Wizard.
