One of the most refreshingly funny comic strips of modern times, Beau Peep was the creation of writer Roger Kettle and artist Andrew Christine. Beau, a distinctly comical figure real name Bert , joined the Foreign Legion to escape his brutish wife, Doris, but proved to be an incompetent soldier and a liability to his colleagues. Beau Peep was first published in the launch issue of British newspaper The Daily Star on 2 November , and ran until late The strip is drawn by Roger Mahoney. Beau Peep was originally intended as a parody of Beau Geste , a adventure novel by British author P. Wren , which has itself been adapted for the screen several times, and again parodied even more. However Beau Peep grew to have a distinctive character and identity in its own right and is perhaps the most famous of these parodies of Beau Geste , still retaining a large fan base. On the forum of the official Beau Peep website, writer Roger Kettle also claims to have been inspired by the American comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. As well as daily appearances in The Daily Star , paperback anthologies of Beau Peep were published every year between and A total of 20 books were published, including, in , a special 'Colour Collection'. These have been issued through various publishing houses, most notably by Pedigree Books. Some comic strips are available for viewing online on the Beau Peep official website. The strip was dropped from the Daily Star in December , as part of a cost-cutting exercise. This resulted in a huge sales loss for the paper and demands from fans for Beau Peep to be brought back. Beau Peep is a British comic strip written by Roger Kettle, drawn by Andrew Christie and published in the Daily Star from to and again from to when it was dropped by the newspaper for financial reasons. These lunatics include the Ax-Crazy Mad Pierre, the Cloud Cuckoolander Colonel Escargot, who believes the Swiss are invading and had his psychiatrist shot, and Peep's best friend Dennis Pratt, a Manchild who believes everything he's told. Sergeant Bidet is relatively sane, but despises Peep for being an incompetent coward, and deliberately sends him on suicide missions. There is also Lethal Chef Egon, who combines appalling hygiene with an inability to make anything that isn't mince. Minor Legionnaires include Hamish, who is a Scottish stereotype, but beyond that is quite reasonable and the only character Peep feels he can actually have a sensible conversation with even if he can't always understand it , and Sergeant Slaughter not that one , a terrifying Drill Sergeant Nasty. Characters from outside the fort include the Nomad, an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain who wants to bring the head of a Legionnaire back to his village so they'll forgive his crimes, Honest Adbul, an Honest John who sells junk to gullible fools like Dennis and the Nomad, and Vera of the Seven Veils, an exotic Belly Dancer Dennis has a crush on, who frequently punches him in the mouth.
