Before the changes, bow hunters operated on a general system, meaning they could purchase tags anytime during the season and were guaranteed a chance to hunt. Now, archers wanting to hunt elk in the Northeast part of the state will be operating on a controlled hunt, where hunters apply for a limited number of hunting spots in an area. Remember new regulations are highlighted in yellow throughout the regulation booklets. New this year, a separate validation is required to fish for all winter both hatchery and wild steelhead in the Rogue-South Coast region. A separate wild steelhead harvest tag is also needed to keep wild winter steelhead. Record any wild steelhead from this region on this tag, not the combined angling tag. No bag limit or size limits when fishing for for bass fishing in streams. Lost Lake: All landlocked salmon are now considered trout. North Umpqua fishing areas have been clarified in section of the river from marker below Soda Springs Dam to Slide Creek Dam, see regs. New validation and harvest tag for winter steelhead in Rogue-South Coast region, see above. Note access to the Santiam River is still restricted due to wildfires. Fall River: Anglers must release wild rainbow trout.

Features: Roosevelt elk are one of two subspecies of elk found in Oregon, with an estimated population of 59, in the state. Habitat: Roosevelt elk occupy most of western Oregon, with concentrations in the Cascade and Coast ranges. Techniques: Roosevelt elk make their home in the thick and lush forests of western Oregon so still, spot and stalk, and calling are recommended. Rifle, archery and muzzleloader seasons are available. Most archery and many rifle hunts are general season in western Oregon, except for parts of SW Oregon and the Saddle Mtn Unit which are limited entry apply by May 15 for these controlled hunts. Features: Rocky Mountain elk are one of two subspecies of elk found in Oregon, with a population estimate of more than 74, in the state.

The Youth Mentored Hunter Program allows youth ages to hunt without passing a hunter education class or purchasing a license or tags. See page 6 of the regulations for further information.
