Octopath Traveler [b] is a role-playing video game developed by Square Enix , in collaboration with Acquire. It received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its presentation, music, and battle system, while its story received more mixed responses. The game had sold over 3 million copies worldwide by September Octopath Traveler features a graphical aesthetic known as "HD-2D", defined by the developers as combining retro Super NES -style character sprites and textures with polygonal environments and high-definition effects. Players start the game by choosing a protagonist from one of eight adventurers, each of whom begins their journey in different parts of the world. Once a protagonist character is chosen, they cannot be removed from the active party until their story arc, which consists of four chapters, is concluded. Characters not chosen as the protagonist may be recruited at their starting locations.

It is a sequel to Octopath Traveler , and the third entry in the series after the prequel mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent , though it features a new cast of characters and setting separate from prior games. The game retains the turn-based battle system of the first game as well, including the "break" and "boost" systems. When the player starts the game, they'll have to choose one of the 8 characters to start their journey. The chosen character will then become the protagonist of the story. Said character can't be removed from the active party until their story is completed.

When I reviewed the original Octopath Traveler almost five years ago, I absolutely loved it. I was completely smitten with its art style, its spiritual and artistic connections to the bit JRPGs I grew up with, and its amazing battle system. Playing Octopath Traveler 2, I was excited to see everything I loved about the original return. In fact, outside of the specific stories being told, Octopath Traveler 2 is almost indistinguishable from its predecessor. You can choose to start with any of them, and after playing through the first hour-long chapter of their story you're stuck with that character for the rest of the campaign — meaning you can't remove them from your party. You're then free to wander the beautiful tilt-shift world, but areas are more or less locked out by their difficulty level.
