The restaurant is the newest concept from the Eastern Culinary Collective , a hospitality group that has been making moves on the Sunshine Coast scene with Japanese-inspired casual fine diner Soka in Maroochydore and Korean charcoal barbecue restaurant Jango in Kawana. Nonda may boast the look of an ultra-modern fine dining restaurant, but the ECC team has been conscious to offset the chic design with an offering that hews closer to casual and repeat custom. Though described as a sibling to Soka, Nonda only takes traces of DNA from its coastal kin, offering a menu of East Asian-inspired flavours that mixes elements from multiple cuisines, rather than just one. Korean and Chinese influences enhance the Japanese-inspired foundations that ground the share-style offering, which leads with starters like clam croquettes with shaoxing wine, bechamel and pecorino, and zucchini tempura with black-miso jam. These snacks are followed by morsels from the raw bar, including sashimi tacos with fermented chilli and avocado cream, wagyu tartare with a fermented kimchi roll and egg yolk, and a sashimi selection featuring tuna, kingfish, salmon, coral trout and scallops. From here portions increase — tables can fill quickly with plates of char-grilled corn lovingly coated in teriyaki mayo and salted ricotta, mushroom tantan men with dobanjang, Mooloolaba king prawns bathing in shiso butter, reef cod swimming in white soy ponzu and brown garlic butter, crispy Korean old-school chicken with roasted honey garlic, and black vinegar sweet-and-sour pork with puffed rice crackers.
