Some are well-intentioned and have been taking part in volunteer searches organised by local residents with advice from police over the past two weeks. But friends of Ms Bulley and local politicians have criticised those who have come down to the scene in an apparent effort to promote social media channels or simply watch the search operation. Lancashire Police continue to insist they do not believe there is any third-party involvement and are treating the case as a missing person inquiry rather than a crime. However, the mysterious disappearance of Ms Bulley has made headlines around the world, with stories appearing on TV channels as far as the US and Australia and there has been no shortage of amateur sleuths wanting to solve the case themselves. On one TikTok account, a man has been posting videos of himself searching the riverside and nearby buildings by nightfall.
On Saturday, officers said they wanted to trace a person in a yellow coat seen pushing a pram in the area near where the dog walker went missing. The speculation and abuse on social media aimed at some people who are merely assisting our enquiry is totally unacceptable.
