New Amsterdam's return feels like the warm embrace of a loved one that we still can't experience, and the poignancy of that isn't lost. The first five minutes of New Amsterdam Season 3 Episode 1 , served as a meaningful tribute to all frontline workers who poured their entire selves into saving lives during the peak of the pandemic, and they were the most heartrending, exquisite moments of a stellar hour. The series has never felt more resonant, as the characters, like the rest of us, are trying to figure out what this new normal is and where we go from here. Not for Kapoor, obviously, and not for many others in the hospital, even if the more pressing matter of a passenger plane crash-landing in the East River becomes the immediate concern. The officials determinedly trying to condemn Dane came across as far too cartoonishly villainous, and it was fairly obvious from early on that his manic episode led him to heroism. Max and Iggy predictably saw this and fought to prove it, and they succeeded a bit too easily. Still, the actual beats of the story were effective, at least for me. Casey relates her experience to his own military service, and how he missed combat, which is perhaps the closest analog. It also feels like a better outgrowth of the pandemic than Helen struggling with intimacy, especially since she seemed to struggle with it throughout the first two seasons as well.
