It was on my birthday, October 18 thwhere console gaming changed forever. The most popular ones at launch were Super Mario Bros.

It discontinued in The body was made flatter and curvier, more like a wedge than the boxy original. This also made the system smaller. The power button in front was replaced with a larger red power switch on top. The reset button was replaced with a larger grey button on top.

At the time of its release in , the NES barely registered on the radar for most serious gamers. Improved hardware and most importantly, an improved pin connector meant the days of huffing and puffing into non-working game cartridges was a thing of the past. It would have been the ideal NES system except for one slight oversight: the video composite signal was only pushed out in RF, not higher quality AV. Worse still was the fact the RF output was lousy, most notably in dark backgrounds where faint but quite visible vertical lines would appear. One would assume that eliminating the AV out was a money saving measure to keep the price down. For years my Top Loader sat on the shelf, as I preferred the cranky nature of my original NES with its high quality output over the visually flawed but always reliable Top Loader. Game-Tech was very professional, quick and did a fantastic job on my NES. When I tested it, everything worked like a charm and my games have never looked better. And no more blinking screen of death!! The red LED is a nice touch too, though maybe not as cool as this custom mod. Now I have the best of both worlds: a true Nintendo developed console that not only looks and sounds great but is incredibly reliable! The red LED light is a nice touch, don't you think? The Nintendo Entertainment System NES , an 8-bit third-generation home video game console produced by Nintendo , had numerous model variants produced throughout its lifetime. It was originally released in as the Family Computer [a] and widely known as the Famicom [b] in Japan, with design work led by Masayuki Uemura. Nintendo intentionally redesigned it as the NES in North America in an attempt to avoid the stigma of video game consoles lingering from the video game crash the same year; while it was initially conceptualized as a home computer , it was ultimately modeled after a videocassette recorder VCR for its debut there in Only the television variant was given a release in North America. Meanwhile, Nintendo produced two arcade variants of the console: the Nintendo VS. System , released in to gauge consumer interest in the United States for then-unreleased Famicom games; and the PlayChoice , released in as a demonstration unit for NES games. The company elected to revert to the top-loading cartridge slot with the NES due to reliability issues with the original front-loading slot. It was the sole design in production when the console was ultimately discontinued in According to Uemura, video games were an unfamiliar concept to Japanese toy stores when they were introduced; the stores did not consider carrying them since they required televisions, which the stores did not sell at the time. Rather than targeting the educational market with PC -like styling, Uemura styled the Famicom like a toy as a cheaper option.
