Over the years, the series left followers with more questions than answers, but its final chapter managed to address many of them. Still, one huge hole was left open, leaving fans to agonize over the state of their favorite ship. Now, Hiro Mashima is trying to put those fans at ease. The creator of Fairy Tail finally opened up about the state of Natsu and Lucy's relationship and why the series ended with the boy as single as ever.

Fairy Tail 's anime has come to an end with the latest episode , and one of the major reasons fans have been sticking with the series over its ten year tenure was seeing just how much closer Natsu and Lucy were growing with each new arc. Last he knew, he had just destroyed a port village sacrificing people to dragons, but now he has no idea where he is and there's not a single dragon he can smell anywhere near him anymore. Later on, Lucy follows Erza, Wendy and Carla to find Natsu, Gray and a shell-shocked Happy, Lucy worriedly asks where Natsu and Gray are who reveals Natsu and Gray have been fighting each other for the past three days after defeating their monster. Seeing how Lucy is pleading for Natsu to answer her, Brandish offers to heal Natsu by shrinking the anti-ethernano tumour until it becomes non-existent, making Lucy beg her to save Natsu while tears streamed down her face. Keyes then gets the upper hand on Juvia and summons an army of skeletons, one of which bears down on Lucy as she tries to get up again. Telling Natsu not to look, Natsu hastily grabs Lucy's breasts to try and cover them from his eyes, which only insults her more and she punches him, screaming for him to cover his eyes instead.
