My so called life outfits
There is a special place in our hearts for the too-short run of the series My So-Called Life. How many times did we wish we had friends like Rayanne and Rickie? How badly did we want the perfect bob haircut like Angela?
I think your identity is sort of set in your teenage years. And my cultural identity was set at that same time. This whole slideshow is a delight going from on and off screen style from MSCL to now including some rather dreamy takes about her relationship with Hugh Dancy. The cover image goes full 90s with a darker lip color Winona would approve and this silk Lanvin dress is a stunning shade of blue; even if I would love to see a photo shoot in Danes endorsed overalls. Or maybe a little bit of plaid. But as far as glam editorials go this one is good , if not a little run of the mill. And while one of the topics covered is the much discussed cry face phenomenon, my favorite shot is on the other end of the facial expression scale.

But now? Now it is time to spend a full hour with arguably the best show to debut on the fall schedule: My So-Called Life. Somehow she made them work, thanks in no small part to the vision of former costume designer turned prolific TV director Patrick R. How did you get involved with My So-Called Life? I started costuming just to get a job in the business. I still wanted to direct. I knew going into this job that this would be my last costume-design job, so I wanted to go out doing something different with these kids rather than what would be normal for television kids. It was a lot of fun getting in there knowing I could do anything I wanted. What was your inspiration for her look? When it came to Angela, and every one of these characters, I had to conceive looks that I liked throughout my own history — meaning from movies, rock stars, whatever — and bring all the things I really enjoyed and liked to look at into these closets for individual people. For Angela, I was thinking about the grunge movement and Kurt Cobain, but also the softness and silhouettes in Annie Hall.
I fed off their personal demeanors for clothes. We rock a lot of polka dots. Is this person as those three capital letters scream going to be part of my life forever?
On quite a personal level, I have never identified with any fictional character more than I identified with Angela Chase Claire Danes , from her constant introspection, to her wild friends and quirky family, and her heartbreaking and mostly unrequited love for the distant Jordan Catalano Jared Leto. However, when it came to unique and inspiring wardrobe choices, the true star of the show was undoubtedly A. Langer as Rayanne Graff. Sure, as a character, Rayanne was far from perfect. She had her share of issues with drugs and alcohol, and these led to her not always being the most reliable or loyal friend for the much more sensitive Angela and Rickie. But for the most part, Rayanne had a heart of gold Whether you got to experience '90s fashion firsthand or not, the show provides a window to the various styles you would have seen in high school at the time in a very realistic and non-stereotypical way.

My So-Called Life. By Eric Goldman. You think back on teenage focused shows before My So-Called Life and "realistic" is hardly the word that comes to mind. Sure, was soapy fun and Saved by the Bell has a bizarre so-bad-it's-good allure no one can quite mathematically quantify. But with one or two exceptions -- The Wonder Years comes to mind -- you could hardly watch an episode of those shows, nor pretty much any other teen show pre, and say "Oh wow, I can relate to that. It's about a 15 year old girl's life, without any "we're moving to the big city" drama or sitcom shenanigans. That 15 year old in question is Angela Chase Claire Danes. She's at that point where she's desperate to redefine herself, and as a result, she's making some big changes, including pushing aside her former best friend, Sharon Devon Odessa , and dying her hair "crimson glow" red.

She made me want to wake up earlier just so I could have fun playing with my hair in the morning. What was your inspiration for her look? I felt like the protagonist Angela was the best look to show past trends and how we have made them able to rock in real life today. Step up Angela Chase and from her first introspective voiceover I knew I had found a heroine for a life; someone that understood who I was and what I was going through and it was a voice coming from my television. The sweater with the green sleeves — that was definitely one of her favorites. Now it is time to spend a full hour with arguably the best show to debut on the fall schedule: My So-Called Life. I like this look on her, especially that hat. And she would put it on, and I think what she would like about it was the fact that it was different, and when it was different, it would help her go to a different place as well. Like this: Like Loading Somehow she made them work, thanks in no small part to the vision of former costume designer turned prolific TV director Patrick R. Rayanne was a big influence on her over the course of the show. I am a sucker for heavy handed comparisons that layer it on with emotions. Rayanne's style on the show was completely unique. Now picture Angela grabbing some of that, and then throwing on a plaid, and then putting on some Doc Martens, and then layering it with a sweater.
One of my all time favorite shows was My So-Called Life.
And brown cords over a green sweatshirt for any time at all. Being ignored for no particular reason is one of those awful teenage rite of passage that every girl in my class went through, it just so happened that mine occurred during the summer break. Now with jeans. I think Rickie should stick to his many awesome vests. When you're as comfortable with who you are as she is, though, you don't even need a million accessories and flamboyant clothes for your unique and vibrant personality to shine through. More heartbreak followed when I found out that only 18 episodes of this show had been made and it was rather fitting that this intense love affair with this world and characters lasted for just one summer. Not a shirt! MSCL not only flirted with gender fluidity before it became a part of the national conversation, it questioned the parameters of conventional maleness. That was the key to the city right there. Photos: 1 , 2 , 3. To make that statement. When you were 15 and every time you went to school, did you buy a new outfit?
