An apocalyptic event has ravaged Japan, leaving nothing but endless sandy plains behind, and a strange rusting disease terrorizes the remnants of civilization.

Japan as we know it is no more. After all, life finds a way. From the ruins, people started rebuilding. Small towns popped up here and there. There was a real chance that Japa would once again see the dawn, except the legacy of that disaster was much worse than destroyed buildings and devastated landscapes. It brought the rust wind, spreading persistent rust that destroys everything in its way. Including people.

The light novel is licensed in North America by Yen Press. An anime television series adaptation produced by OZ aired from January to March A second season has been announced. It is believed to originate from mushroom spores and so Bisco Akaboshi, a Mushroom Keeper and archer whose arrows instantly grow mushrooms wherever they land, is a wanted criminal.

In a far-off future, toxic winds have decimated the world, leaving behind only rust. The majority blame mushroom spores for not only the state of the environment but also for the mysterious illness that causes its victims to slowly rust away. Bisco, who spawns giant mushrooms with his bow, is a wanted criminal. In truth, he is a Mushroom Keeper, a traveling archer who heals the land with fungi. Rust-Eater Bisco is one of the most promising releases of the Winter season. The adventures of Bisco and Milo have already led to some great action sequences and touching moments. The series is uniquely strange, with giant rideable crabs, snail airplanes, and carnivorous flying blowfish are just some of the oddities that make it visually stunning. While nothing is exactly the same, several anime share similarities with Rust-Eater Bisco.

There are many post-apocalyptic anime out there, although none of them are known for featuring toxic dust. Mushrooming from light novel series to manga to anime, Bisco has been a success in many forms for over four years now. Of course, the interesting name and the presence of giant crabs in the story probably help.
