The museum is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru — Museum Wales. It consists of more than forty re-erected buildings from various locations in Wales, and is set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle , a Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house. The museum was founded in following the donation of the castle and lands by the Earl of Plymouth. The museum's name in Welsh also meaning "Welsh Folk Museum" has remained unchanged since that date, whereas the English title was revised to Museum of Welsh Life , thereafter St Fagans National History Museum , and again to its current title. The brainchild of Iorwerth Peate , the museum was modelled on Skansen , the outdoor museum of vernacular Swedish architecture in Stockholm. Most structures re-erected in Skansen were built of wood and are thus easily taken apart and reassembled, but a comparable museum in Wales was going to be more ambitious, as much of the vernacular architecture of Wales is made of masonry. St Fagan's Museum is set in acres of parkland in the grounds nprn of St Fagans Castle nprns and A late 16th century manor house, the Welsh Folk Museum was opened in and was a pioneer open air museum. There are a number of galleries in the main museum buildings and exhibits in the castle itself. The open-air section now has over 40 original buildings moved from various parts of Wales and carefully re-erected.

The museum occupies the grounds of historic St Fagans Castle, a Tudor manor house given to the nation by the Earl of Plymouth in along with 18 acres of beautiful gardens and grounds. Scattered around the castle grounds are over 50 historic buildings, brought here from their original sites across Wales and reassembled. The wealth of historical buildings gathered together on one site is remarkable; here you can see a medieval prince's hall, a traditional clog-maker's workshop, a Victorian school, a woollen mill, a medieval church, farmhouses, a corn mill, a war memorial, a Workmen's Institute, and an 18th-century chapel, to name just a few highlights. Dr Gibbon probably never lived in the house and the building as we see it today is the work of Edward Lewis of Y Fan, Caerphilly, and his wife Blanche, whose monogram EBL appear on interior fittings. St Fagans National Museum of History is happy to welcome trained assistance dogs, but we do not allow any other animals into the galleries, historic houses or the cafes. Dogs are allowed in all other areas, but must be kept on a short lead at all times. Water bowls are provided at the entrance and by the cafes.
