Constructed decks can have up to four of any card in their combined deck and sideboard. Basic lands are not included in this restriction. It's up to you to crack the case! With Pro Tour Murders at Karlov Manor on our doorstep, featuring the Pioneer format, I want to go through the format and explain how the metagame breaks down. This will also provide insight into my mind, someone who has been working tirelessly to crack this format for the last few weeks. I find myself constantly wanting to play Pioneer - it's addicting! For players who aren't familiar with Pioneer, or haven't played the format recently, let me provide a quick pitch on why this is a format worth buying into. The format is only a little bit over four years old. When Pioneer was first introduced in , it was a huge hit. Part of that is due to how rare introducing new competitive Magic formats is. However, the experience that came along with playing with a larger card pool than Standard but much smaller than Modern hit the sweet spot for many folks, including myself. Another factor that has favored Pioneer is Wizards of the Coast being willing to make aggressive bans when needed. While the pace has slowed recently in terms of the rate of bans, that's largely due to the format being relatively healthy. Faster banning does mean decks change rapidly, but it also keeps the format fresh, with plenty of new cards and strategies to discover. While as of writing this article I'm not aware of the exact metagame breakdown we will see at the Pro Tour, but I'm guessing that the most popular deck will be Izzet Phoenix, as that is what we have seen online. Izzet Phoenix is not a new strategy, and has done well in online formats like Historic, and even was popular in Standard when legal.
