Lands represent locations under the player's control, most of which have mana abilities. The most commonly printed Magic cards are the five basic lands , one for each color , each of which intrinsically produces one mana of a specific color. Lands are played on the player's own main phase when the stack is empty, and only once per turn though there are spells that can alter how many lands you can play a turn, like Exploration. Playing a land is not like playing a spell; it is a special action that does not use the stack and does not require passing priority for it to resolve. When a player wants to play a land and has the opportunity, they simply put it into play. Although many lands generate specific colors of mana, lands are colorless on their own.

The land system defines the game and is largely responsible for making it a unique card game. Rulings-wise, lands are either basic lands or nonbasic lands. All other lands are nonbasic. A deck can have any number of basic lands; nonbasics are restricted to a maximum of four copies. Some spells care about one type or the other; for example, Cultivate finds basic lands, while Ruination only destroys nonbasic lands. As for their roles in deckbuilding, lands serve three functions: mana fixing, value, or build-around. The vast majority of decks play lands for mana fixing. Multicolor decks lean on nonbasic lands that tap for more than one color alongside basics. Mono-colored decks often run a few value lands alongside enough basics of their color to cast their spells consistently. This is overwhelmingly the role lands play in Magic: enabling you to cast your spells. Value lands are lands that do more than just fix your mana. Their role is typically to mitigate flooding by letting your lands do more than tap for mana.

Dual lands or duals is common slang for any non- basic land that produces two colors of mana, particularly the ten original rare lands printed from Alpha to Revised. Since then, "dual land" has also come to refer to any land that can produce two colors of mana. Popular dual land cycles have been printed in numerous sets, including:. There are also a few notable " triple lands " cycles that produce three colors of mana; two cycles of shard-colored triple lands were printed in Shards of Alara and Streets of New Capenna , and two cycles of of wedge-colored triple lands have been printed: one in in Khans of Tarkir , the other in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Urza's Mine Illustration by Brian Snoddy. Lands are a foundational part of Magic: The Gathering. Mechanically, lands are the primary way players generate mana to cast spells. Flavorfully, they represent locations planeswalkers have bonded with from across the multiverse. For this reason or that, new land types have been mechanically necessary to introduce into the game, either to smooth over some confusing rulings or to push the boundaries of what a land card can do.
