Somebody thinks a statement sounds like something a prominent figure might have said, and not caring or knowing how to find verification, sloppily attributes that statement to him. The difficulty in writing about these things, though, is that I have to give examples, and we run the danger of those examples planting themselves in the back of your mind so that later on, having forgotten just what you read, you give added credibility to a false statement because it is somehow familiar.
