Monologue soft sketch book

The Basics Softcover Sketch Book is a must have for beginners at sketching. You will never go wrong with this no-frill sketch book.

A few months ago, manufacturer Grandluxe sent me a few sketchbooks to review. I've since reviewed the Monologue Sketch Pad which is pretty decent. This is part of the Monologue series of sketchbook. The Basics series seem to only have black covers as compared to the colourful Sketch Pad series. The hardcover is covered with some soft leatherette, and apparently thin because mine has some areas chipped off from putting inside my bag. And it seems there are also notebooks 80gsm in the Basics series, so be careful not to buy the wrong type. The sketchbook comes in A6, A5 and A4.

Allegedly, this is a soft sketch book, and technically speaking yes, this is a soft, not hard cover on this book, but you will not find a stiffer notebook for your dollar without falling down a rabbit hole of double entendres. How am I supposed to use a notebook I can barely even open? Step one, crack this book like a winter walnut. I like the texture of this cover, and the size of the notebook. This is a very thick elastic band. Like possibly would double a headband if you pulled it free. And had a small circumference head. Maybe I should have just scanned these. Not that it really lays flat enough for that. Oh well. It works for me because I can rest my hand on the left side of the pages to draw, and it keeps the book open. This is as far as it shuts itself. Elastic band required for full closure. And I like the paper.

However there will be impression of lines from the previous page if when the pages are scanned. For that reason, I leave blank pages behind my sketches.

The folks at GrandLuxe sent me a whole heaping pile of their new Monologue journals. I received four A6 5. Even from the edges, you can see there are slight variations in each book to suit lots of personal preferences. The red A6-sized has pages that are undersized to accommodate a golf-sized pencil tucked in under the edge for the cover with an elastic to hold it securely. The bottom two books have elastic loops to hold a writing tool.

It was when I flipped through the papers that I fell in love with it. From inside, then I went on to the cover, I love everything about it; the gsm Italian acid free drawing paper, the ribbon bookmarker, the black PU-flexi cover with round corners, and the elastic band closure. I knew I just had to have it. Paid SGD26 for it. I was in Singapore at that time.
