Polperro is a fishing port on a rocky coastline near Looe, with narrow, cobbled alleys and houses perched on slopes above the harbour. Much of the village dates from the 13th century, and for many years the prosperity of Polperro was founded on the pilchard fishery. When the pilchard fishery waned, smuggling became perhaps the major source of Polperro's riches. Today most fish landed consists of monkfish, pollock and bass plus lobsters, crabs and scallops. The village also relies heavily on tourism, with visitors drawn by the tightly packed lanes and idyllic fishermen's' cottages that line the picturesque harbour. So it's nice to treat them once and a while with a nice restaurant where they can have all what they want to eat and drink. This is my plate of monkfish, it tasted heavenly and it had rice to go with and small shrimps and vegetables and of course a glass with Omnom drops in it. Despite its small size it is the largest settlement for many miles around, and an important port and tourist destination. The North Atlantic Drift passes Ullapool, moderating the temperature. The town lies on Loch Broom, on the A road from Inverness. The Ullapool River flows through the village. Carved out by the glaciers of the last ice age, Loch Broom offers good protection from the open waters of the Minch. Combine this with a port authority which has the experience and skills to cater for a diverse range of traffic and you have a recipe for success.
