The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest on 18 March , and was released in Australia on 5 May , by Roadshow Films. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Purcell's direction and screenplay, as well as the performances of the cast particularly those of Purcell, Collins, and De Gouw. The film opens with a scene in which Molly Johnson, heavily pregnant, shoots a stray bull which has wandered near her home, after ensuring that her four children are safe. Shortly afterwards the new sergeant of the district, Sergeant Klintoff, turns up with his sickly wife, Louisa, asking if they could share some of the meat that they smelt cooking, as they had lost all of their provisions when crossing the river. She gives them food in exchange for their taking her children to the settlement for safekeeping while her new baby is born. Molly asks the Klintoffs to take her kids with them into town so Danny the eldest son can get more supplies. Molly goes for a walk and coming back home has contractions and finds Kadathu laying face down in the yard. She goes to check him out but her water breaks and her baby starts coming out breach and she loses her. The plot is a reworking of Henry Lawson 's short story The Drover's Wife , but deviates significantly from the original story as developed in Purcell's earlier award-winning play and novel of the same name. Purcell delivers the line with such assurance and authority that, had John Wayne or Charles Bronson been on the receiving end of that threat, they likely would have changed their minds and raised their hands. As a filmmaker, Purcell is brutally specific while defining her 19th-century world and expressing her concerns. Long before the fugitive Yadaka Rob Collins shows up near her doorstep with a metal shackle around his neck and a plaintive tone to his voice, Molly demonstrates her independence by shooting a wild bullock that wanders onto her land, then carving up the carcass to feed herself and her four children. After some initial reluctance fueled by vigilance, she offers places at her table for two travelers: Sgt. The Klintoffs are basically decent, well-meaning people — which Molly obviously recognizes when she accepts their offer to temporarily resettle her children in Everton — and the film grants them, in different ways, opportunities to reveal moral and physical strengths.
