The Preaching of John the Baptist. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. The Baptism of Jesus. The Temptation of Jesus. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry. The kingdom of God is at hand.
Mk 1:1-8
Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. He fed on locusts and wild honey. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Reflection The gospel tells us to prepare the way of the Lord through repentance as what John the Baptist did. I must decrease and He must increase. John teaches us that the first preparation for the coming of Jesus was to know and speak about the truth. Most especially the cradle of God in our hearts. What are my ways in witnessing to the truth? He gave His life on the Cross for us and rose again to new life to redeem us and reconcile us with you. We thank you, Father, for bringing us from darkness into light.

The significance of this observation is to see that these words do not compose a sentence; they rather serve to express the title of the gospel of Mark. Whatever story, miracle, parable, exorcism, teaching or narrative event of Jesus is in the gospel of Mark, it is the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ. This beginning takes place in our hearing or reading of the gospel of Mark. The words of this gospel break into our lives with the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The messenger, witness, and forerunner of this time of fulfillment is John the baptizer.

This challenges a rigid, legalistic, notion of cleansing: strict adherence to the law and its traditions without a mindset of conversion is not enough. We are making it in the light of the revealed knowledge that God loves us immeasurably, and that he has made atonement for us in Jesus Christ. Through the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, we find there is no place on earth God will not go or be for us and this brings us great hope. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals. There are only two instances in the Old Testament in which God is shown to have cured a leper Nm — 15 ; 2 Kgs — I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I know who you are—the Holy One of God! Mt Reflection The attraction of John the Baptist is mysterious. We thank you, Father, for bringing us from darkness into light. John and Jesus were surely well acquainted, and must have played together as children. Most Nazarite vows were taken for a period of time, but if Luke means that John is a Nazarite John was one of the few lifelong Nazarites.
