When the White Martians began massacring their Green cousins, M'gann's parents sent her on a rocket to the Vega system to escape the civil war. M'gann learned that another Green Martian refugee, J'onn J'onzz , had escaped the White Martian tyranny, establishing himself on Earth , and came to Earth herself. While almost correct, this leaves out at least one significant detail, M'gann's true form is that of a White Martian, creatures believed to live only for war and conquest.

She was even willing to go so far as attempting to erase Superboy's memories over their arguments regarding the use of her powers, an act which ultimately lead to their break up. This changed after she did the procedure on Aqualad ; still hating him for Artemis's murder, she used her mindblast on him, ruthlessly extracting all information from him. The discovery that he was undercover left her shocked and deeply traumatized, causing her to reconsider the use of her powers. Miss Martian's true appearance is that of what most humans would consider an inhuman monster, with white skin, long limbs, and a hunchback. She also has freckles on her cheeks. After another two years she is now bald and no longer has freckles, but get her both hair and freckles back when posing as a human. Her skin is now white, reflecting her status as a White Martian. One year later, her hair has return and she now keeps her hair longer, past her shoulder, and she keeps the sclera of her eyes black.
