As a wealthy landowner in Eastern Europe, he and his wife, Esther , start a family. However, their oldest son dies of an illness, so they move to the area that later becomes Mystic Falls and live amongst werewolves. Mikael and Esther come up with the plan to turn their children into vampires after their youngest son, Henrik, is killed by a werewolf. Mikael himself kills them all in order to get them into transition. After finding out that Esther had an affair with a werewolf, resulting in the birth of Klaus. It's also thought that he kills Esther, but it's later found out to be Klaus. Mikael first appears toward the end of The End of the Affair. He seems to be with the police and is looking for Klaus and Rebekah. In the 90s, Mikael is desiccated and locked in a tomb by Abby Bennett. Katherine Pierce awakens him so that he can kill Klaus. He reveals that he doesn't drink blood from living, having not anticipated the blood lust that would come from becoming a vampire.
