My husband and I bought a foreclosed home built in and are in the process of installing light fixtures previous homeowners removed all of them. I'd like a ceiling fan in the master bedroom and am not sure if this is a ceiling fan-rated electrical box. I can see two large screws in the middle of the box, presumably attaching the box to a joist. It looks like it also had some sort of "cross-piece" that they removed when they took the light fixture or maybe it was a ceiling fan, too? There aren't the "poles" for the screws, but there are double sets of "ears. Easy way to check is, if it's a fan box those screw holes will fit a size screw if it's just a ceiling box it will only fit an screw. I think that having a ceiling fan-rated box is only a requirement for fans over 35 pounds Your main concern should simply be how well that standard box is attached to the joist. Those could be short screws, and you won't know until you remove them and perhaps replace them with something longer and, if you do that, use wood screws, not sheetrock screws. It does look like a fan-rated box though it's ahrd to tell with all that paint in it. The telling part is that there apears to be more meat for the mounting screws to go through beyond the simple box tabs. It looks like it is well mounted to something with the two pan-headed phillips in the back of the box I've never seen pan-headed drywall screws. Thank you both! I crawled up into the attic space and see that this box is mounted to a 2x4 in-between the joists. So that should make it pretty secure for a 22 pound fan right?
