The old engines blew the powerbeads, hence the new rebuild. Why take a chance on a motor that will most probably blow up again?
Mercury optimax fuel economy
Having just returned from a substantial voyage i though some people would like a report on the Opti's fuel and oil consumption. Tuesday was dead, dead calm all the way from the Solent to Eastbourne, we made knts all the way and fuel consumption was the highest i have ever seen it, average 0. Most of the time we were sitting at rpm. We also used an alarming amount of oil, about litres. Previously in 40 hours we have used a total of 8 litres of oil. Wednesday was very thick fog, so we sat at a sensiable 20knts ft visability. Eastbourne-Ramsgate saw fuel consumption rise to an average of 1. This was acheived with the Dover-Ramsgate leg at a constant knts. What have i learnt? Optimax economy goes out of the window above about 4k - rpm. Don't go RIBing when it's flat!!!
As you say Daniel, its far too tempting to floor it when its calm.

The 2. In carburetted and EFI form, it can develop up to hp. The combination of a relatively low WOT wide open throttle range — from to rpm — plus big cylinder bore and short piston stroke ensure its long lifespan. Unlike some of its four-stroke competition, the Mercury OptiMax outboard motor is a true marine engine with a diecast alloy cylinder block and head designed to handle the rigours of direct saltwater cooling. Spare parts are readily available and Mercury even offers a rebuild program for the powerhead. This differs from the Evinrude E-TEC system in that it injects atomised air and fuel rather than just straight fuel via unit injectors, as occurs in a direct-injection car engine. However, this is as lean as overall in the combustion chamber. The standard in-boat oil tank holds At kg in extralongshaft 25in the Mercury OptiMax outboard motor is much lighter than any of the direct four-stroke competition.

However, that is not the case with the Mercury OptiMax outboard motor. Its big-displacement three-cylinder powerhead sends waves of vibration through the hull structure at leass than rpm, guaranteeing gentle flab reduction whenever you grip the hull or steering wheel. A belt-driven, voltage-regulated 60A alternator provides plenty of power for electronic toys and since the only other belt is for the air compressor, the is relatively trouble free compared to hp four-strokes. The dry weight is kg for the longshaft version kg for extra-long and the gear ratio 2. Powerhead access is good even though a 4. Mercury recommends servicing every hours or annually after the first 20 hours, and the engine has a five-year recreational use warranty. A hull that could handle kg was a good match for the demo Mercury engine and the Stacer Coral Master Sports Runabout planed at incredibly low speeds. It easily lifted out of the hole and the Mercury planed cleanly from trolling revs in 2. The Merc started instantly hot or cold with no oil smoke and, providing the anti-ventilation plate was kept at least three quarters immersed, it was great for backing off estuarine sandbars. Maintaining a clean plane at only rpm is something few four-stroke s could achieve, and the was incredibly fuel efficient at the most economical cruise speed of rpm.

Joined Sep 22, Messages 28, I get under 1ltr per nm for my 2x60hp 4 stroke Suzuki's on my small butt cat and on my single engined 5. SLE , PM 1. What about the mercury four stroke. Ned , PM I was just watching the fuel used screen. Avon SR6 Twin Yamaha 60hp. The last day we didn't refill so maybe another litres at the most as even though it was a short day it was a rough day. I am wondering what others have experienced with MPG with their Optimax?
Undoubtedly, no other brand makes outboard motors more powerful, efficient, and reliable than Mercury Marine.
I also have a 50 Merc EFI four stroke on my pontoon and it has run flawlessly, however it's not as quite as the optimax and you can smell the exhaust with a trailing wind. Results 1 to 6 of 6. Take the etec in to the dealer and get it checked. At best cruise Sign up. Thats great fuel economy for a straight out of the box. The least powerful of a trio of Direct Fuel Injection two-strokes from to hp, the OptiMax produces substantially more torque than its 2. I get 2. Regards Craigie. SDRanger , PM I did some quick reading in my smartcraft sc manual and it speaks of calibrating fuel usage. Dicko, You make some interesting points. I thought that milage seemed a bit much, but I did a few calculations about the distance up and down monduran and the amount of times I did it over 2 days 7. No trolling, just there and back at rpm.
