A relative newcomer to the tennis circuit, the event was founded in as part of the women's WTA tour and the men's ATP tour. As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the event was a women's-only tournament, but saw it return to its intended format, accommodating men's matches too. Whilst the inclusion of both men's and women's draws is not unusual on the professional tennis tour, the Adelaide International had previously used a unique version of the dual-event format: the competition was previously comprised of 2 combined tournaments, "Adelaide 1" and "Adelaide 2", which took place across consecutive weeks at the tournament's host venue, the Memorial Drive Tennis Club.
