Mega Man X [a] is a series of action platform games released by Capcom. It is a sub-series of the Mega Man franchise previously developed by the same group with Keiji Inafune acting as one of the main staff members. Most of the sequels were ported to Microsoft Windows. The gameplay introduces new elements to the Mega Man franchise in the form of Mega Man 's successor X including his new skills and power ups in the form of armors while retaining the ability to decide which boss to fight first. The first six games in the series were compiled in the anthology Mega Man X Collection and then the Legacy duology collected the entire eight main games. Set years after the original games, the story follows X, the last creation of Dr. Light whose free-willed programming and intelligence allows for countless other free-willed androids called reploids to be produced.

Thomas Light , the co-father of Light Labs and modern robotics with Dr. Albert W. Wily , was the designer of many great inventions during his lifetime. He and Dr. Wily were responsible for the creation of the Robot Masters in the s , a project which created artificial, humanoid beings with advanced AI that could complete very complex tasks unlike other, more simplistic robots. Thus, these inventions became the highlight of the career of Dr. Light, though Wily would revolt by the end of the decade circa , leading to nearly a decade of fighting between robots and in some cases humans known as the Wily Wars. It was during this time that Dr. Light converted one of the first Robot Masters, Rock , a helpful lab assistant, into a fighting robot known as Mega Man. In his later years, sometime most likely in the s though this is not certain, yet this would make sense as Light was born circa , Dr. Light worked on a project creating a far more advanced Artificial Intelligence.
Sigma, however, was written as a once-good character suffering an "unforeseen error" that leads him to be completely evil. These include X Rising Fire Ver.

X was the first robot to possess free will, sentience, and independent thought , no longer requiring restrictive programming or rules to dictate his behavior, making him the first known Reploid.
