Intelligence can matter more than brutal power, even when power is wielded by a large adult over a small child.

Children who displease the evil principal are put in "the chokey," a dark closet lined with nails and broken…. Though Matilda's decision to stand up for those who can't or won't stand up for themselves is admirable as is her positive attitude , there's plenty of iffy stuff here. The movie is relatable for kids going through their own growing pains, but the fantasy-based nature of the way Matilda copes with her problems doesn't offer many realistic solutions for young viewers. The film discusses how "most ideas come from hard work and careful planning. When Matilda's parents aren't neglecting her leaving a 2-year-old to fend for herself for a great portion of the day, for example , they're berating her. Matilda's principal openly hates the children in her charge. Matilda decides to punish her parents -- but she also bravely stands up for others and almost always maintains a positive attitude. Matilda is an avid reader with a vivid imagination -- unlike her parents and brother, who want to watch TV all the time. However, no book is for everyone, and some reviewers on here are making it sound as if this book is a manifesto for children to be horrid and immoral. It is NOT. Matilda is a little girl who is a genius and has an evil headmistress and horrid parents who if real would be abusive they leave her alone at home, call her names, set a bad example, etc.
People often talk about the darkness in Roald Dahl's children's books — and it's true, he doesn't hold back on references to bullying, poverty, death, and the dangers of being addicted to chewing gum. What's talked about less often, though, is how much the darkness is balanced by Dahl's jovial, conversational tone, Quentin Blake's cheery, scribbly drawings, and the warm, loving parental figures that their young characters invariably meet. These vital ingredients ensure that however scary Dahl's stories can get, no one is going to be traumatised by them. The same can't be said of the latest adaptation of his work, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, which premiered at the London Film Festival on Wednesday. As close to Stephen King as it is to Dahl, it's only a couple of tweaks away from being the year's most disturbing gothic horror movie.
