The Mass Effect media franchise, developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts , is set in the distant future where various extraterrestrial species coexist with humanity. The developers created extensive background lore for the universe of Mass Effect and its alien species, with detailed explanations documenting the complex relationships between the universe's various factions and the setting's phenomena from a scientific perspective. The developers were inspired and influenced by numerous fantasy and science fiction works, as well as real world cultural and scientific concepts. Mass Effect brings together disparate species from across the Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies in an underdog bid for survival. With two stories now stretching across vast amounts of space and time, the sci-fi video game setting has touched on many sentient races that may well be fleshed out in new titles. Mysteries abound in the Mass Effect universe, many of them central to overcoming ancient horrors and preserving the future. As players discover more about the setting and lore of the series, new species shall likely continue to come to light and become a part of the growing universe. Previous Asari teachings asserted that the goddess Athame fought off the dangerous Milky Way race during the previous cycle. The skies lit with fire and the battle against the Oravores became a major part of Asari religious and historical traditions. Javik notes the similarities in appearance between himself and Athame as well as describing the armaments used in the battle over Thessia, homeworld of the Asari, as proof of his recollection of the tale. Another race from the Prothean era, the Densorin are known best for their mastery of celestial mechanics and interstellar language development. A close second trivia tidbit is the archived fact that they attempted to appease the Reapers by sacrificing an entire generation of their offspring, but to no avail. They also battled the Oravores before the beginning of the Reaper harvest before finally succumbing to the Reapers themselves. In the ruins of the giant ships that saw use in those battles, Prothean excavators found the remnants of mass effect drives and other technology that would come to define the era.

The world of Mass Effect is vast and expansive, full of intriguing alien races that add color and complexity to the already intricate galaxy. So, love for the Mass Effect franchise might be at an all-time low at the moment thanks to less-than-stellar releases like Mass Effect: Andromeda. But, for a time, it was one of the most well-regarded game series of this generation. It was a story about choices, intergalactic politics, sweet space magic, and romance. But, when it comes right down to it, Mass Effect is all about the aliens. And, because they're all so different, it's incredibly hard to evaluate all the strengths and weaknesses of each race, but we'll do our darndest. What is that?

With the Mass Effect Legendary Edition set to release in , it's time to look at many of the aspects of the franchise that make the trilogy an all-time great. Outside of humans, the games feature dozens of original alien races that were designed with distinct characteristics that make them quite memorable. With that many alien races, there are a bit over a handful that make quite an impression in one way or another. Whether it's the proud military might of the Turians, the intelligence of Salarians, or the brute strength of the Krogans, there are reasons to love all of them. On the Citadel players get their first glimpse at the many strange alien races the world of Mass Effect has to offer. The Hanar are these tall jellyfish-like creatures that walk on long legs and are vibrant in color. It's a race of extremely religious creatures who also happen to be quite polite in conversation. When standing on Earth they're slightly taller than the average human but prefer to be in water as they cannot stand with contra-gravitic levitation packs they use when going about their business on the Citadel. The Rachni have an interesting story as these insect-like terrors almost took over if not for the Krogans. These creatures were super-intelligent and very aggressive when it came to protecting themselves.

Two notable asari who first appear in Mass Effect 2 include Aria T'Loak, the de facto ruler of the space station Omega, an important hub in the Terminus Systems, and the owner of the Afterlife nightclub; and Samara , a potential companion of Commander Shepard and a member of the Justicars, a class of extrajudicial law enforcement officers and executioners operating almost exclusively within asari territory. The fourth main series game is a standalone sequel about a group of settlers who are members of the Andromeda Initiative colonizing the Andromeda Galaxy. The Scourge that derailed the Andromeda expedition also dramatically affected the Vaults, and upcoming titles may well rely heavily on further unearthing the secrets of those Vaults and their builders. Their preparations survive into the next cycle, in the form of the Crucible. These races failed to prevent exaltation, a physical and mental transformation that results in creatures becoming servants of the warlike aliens, though some members or at least memories of the separate species exist. The Protheans lived in the Reaper cycle immediately preceding the one which players live through in the Mass Effect trilogy. The Citadel Council soon invites a human to join the Spectres, elite enforcers that use both espionage and force to complete their assignments. Indeed, the Elcor take everything slowly, from their economics to their military endeavors. Most races consider the vorcha pests; in return, the vorcha live up to their infamous reputations, acting mainly as mercenaries and scavengers and bringing violence everywhere they go. She is also arguably the canon romance for Shepard, male or female, which is pretty impressive.

Salarians think fast, talk fast, and move fast. It's one of those great elements that fascinated us, as designers and developers, because it is something that actually sort of exists in our world, at least theoretically. Their design was based on a now-extinct species called the Leviathans, whom the Reapers destroyed at the order of the Catalyst. Javik notes the similarities in appearance between himself and Athame as well as describing the armaments used in the battle over Thessia, homeworld of the Asari, as proof of his recollection of the tale. The secrets of the Kett are likely to return as a Mass Effect narrative. So in that sense, I can't imagine a Mass Effect experience without it. This is true for a large number of Batarians, who thrive in the chaotic Terminus Systems — but not for all of them. When the salarians arrived, it was the asari who proposed the establishment of the Citadel Council to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. Retrieved September 5, Tools Tools.
