While information on the game might be fleeting, we do at least know Mass Effect 5 - or at least a new Mass Effect game - is in development at BioWare. From everything we do know, it looks like we're going to be waiting some time before we either find out more about the game or have any chance of playing it. The Mass Effect 5 devs say they're thinking hard about canon debates right now , but also added that "development has been proceeding very well" in a recent blog post. That's all we can hope for really. We have had some concept art, and a duo of teaser trailers, but realistically details on what the new Mass Effect game will be are pretty light. What we do know is that the next Mass Effect game looks set to be a follow-up to the original Mass Effect trilogy - which is often counted among the best RPGs around. BioWare also recently committed to it being a single-player experience like those that came before it, and we have additional details like it will feature returning characters from the original trilogy. With some of the best game stories around, the prospect of another entry in the series has us all excited. While we may be in for quite the wait to see the game arrive, read on below to get a rundown of everything we know so far about Mass Effect 5. Over the course of a few hours, BioWare drip-fed snippets of footage which led up to the reveal of the above second teaser trailer. It was initially pitched as a countdown for "Mass Effect Epsilon" - which just so happens to be the number five - but then the teasers evolved to be titled other things like 'Defiance' and 'Post-Nebula' with notes of access codes of "OculonDefiance". That reference makes us think this will be when the game is set.
It is so far in another galaxy right now.
If you were hoping the next Mass Effect game -- tentaively dubbed Mass Effect 4 by many, and Mass Effect 5 by others -- was coming out soon, well you can let go of this hope. A new update on what's going on over at BioWare has been shared, and while it's primarily focused on the studio's most imminent game, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf , it does briefly touch upon the new Mass Effect game also in development. According to the update -- relayed by Games Beat -- the Mass Effect team is being brought over to help finish the development of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf , which has been in post-production since September of last year. The closer the game gets to release, the more production and polishing ramps up, which is why the Mass Effect team is brought in. This is great news for the new Dragon Age game, as it means more resources and polish. It's not great news for the new Mass Effect game though, which has been confirmed to still be in pre-production. In other words, it's still years away from release as it will presumably need at least a couple years in production, and about a year to 18 months in post-production, before it's ready to release.
The original trilogy was one of the most ambitious trilogies of that generation and managed to grow a massive fanbase for a new franchise. This little teaser had no indication on when we can expect to see the next Mass Effect game. Not even a year was attached, which leads us to believe that it is still early on in development. Other evidence of this is that BioWare has multiple other projects its teams are working on, such as Dragon Age 4 , the ongoing Anthem , and the upcoming Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which remasters the original trilogy. This could place its release as late as sometime around or even If the release date is as far off as we suspect, perhaps as much as three or four years, then it would only make sense for it to be on the current PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. This generational switch has been the slowest to fully transition over in terms of games being released on previous- and current-generation consoles because of just how big the install base is, but also how much easier it is for games to be upgraded for the more powerful hardware, but by this point, massive titles like this should be targeting only the higher-end machines. So far all we have to work from regarding Mass Effect 4 is the less than two-minute teaser trailer from The Game Awards. We are shown the Milky Way galaxy as the camera zooms in and radio transmissions play out. The camera zips past stars, planets, asteroids, and a massive debris field as the transmissions become more panicked and erratic until finally focusing on a ship heading down to a mysterious planet.
