The SNES is one of those systems that had a revolutionary game released for it every single year, from , when it came out in the United States, up to when the console was finally discontinued in that same country. The SNES is often considered to have had one of the best launch lineups in gaming history, with important titles that showed off its new bit technology, like Pilotwings or F-Zero. But since Mario had been responsible for the sales of so many NES consoles, it was only logical that Nintendo would release their next console alongside the fourth mainline entry, Super Mario World. This game changed the Mario franchise forever : It featured detailed sprites and environments that demonstrated how powerful the SNES truly was.

Super Mario RPG 's story focuses on Mario and his friends as they seek to defeat the Smithy Gang, who have crashed into their world and scattered the seven star pieces of Star Road. The main form of fighting enemies is turn-based combat with a party of up to three characters. It is also the first game in the Mario franchise to have gameplay within an isometric 3D environment, allowing for a new variety of the exploration and platforming elements reminiscent of the Super Mario series. Super Mario RPG was critically acclaimed, and particularly praised for its humor and 3D-rendered graphics. A remake developed by ArtePiazza for the Nintendo Switch was released worldwide on November 17, , and received positive reviews from critics. Much of Super Mario RPG ' s gameplay is outside monster battles and plays like an isometric 3D platformer, in which traditional Mario elements such as punching floating question blocks from below are prominent. One of the original artists who worked on the SNES version of Super Mario RPG reveals a bunch of scrapped concept art, which showed how the game was originally proposed with a Three Musketeers motif in mind. The release of the Super Mario RPG remake on Nintendo Switch has been a critical and commercial hit, making it one of the biggest and most successful released from Nintendo's library.
