It was a happy day when I discovered a little slice of gelati heaven called MaPo. What was less happy was the fact that this discovered occurred approximately a week before lockdown started. And whilst MaPo stayed open throughout those dark months, I unfortunately did not live within 5km, or even 10km, and hence was forced to be MaPo-less for the entire time. And yes, you can consider this a spoiler to what I think of MaPo. The little storefront is decorated in an attractive industrial style, with pops of yellow and gold breaking up the natural beige.

Who doesn't know Newtown? The bohemian-like suburb with great stores along the main road. From indie clothing labels, indie bookshops, thrift stores and lots of murals. Here is also where the Mapo Gelato located, few minutes walk from the station. Why it called Mapo? It turned out the name this Italian Gelato is an abbreviation from owner's favorite fruits in Italian which are Mandarino and Pompelmo, or in English is Mandarin and Grapefruit. Mapo is also coincidentally or not :P as the abbreviation of the name of the owner, Matteo Pochintesta don't let him know that I tell you this,hahaha. Matteo and Emanuela make the gelato in-store with fresh and natural ingredients. The simplicity of the store really warm you up whenever you come inside. During my visit they serve at least 15 different flavours with 7 seasonal flavours. You can check on their menu whether it is Vegan, Organic, Fat Free, Lactose fee, Nuts Free or Gluten Free or you can just tell them you preference and they will happily inform you. What I like the most from this gelato is actually the taste. It is not overly sweet like any other gelato and when you try it, you will know that it made from fresh ingredients. From those four flavours, my favourite one is Gianduja which made from single origin Ecuadorian Chocolate and Piedmont Hazelnuts, they even put it "aka Like Nutella, but better" oh the menu list. Couldn't agree more.

The hazelnut flavour itself had an amazing clarity to it, an unadulterated roasted nuttiness supported only by the highest quality milk and sugar. On one of many subsequent visits, I decided to try one of their permanent flavours — the Caramello. That is why we decided to do. The official translation for that is chocolate pudding, but if you ask me, it tastes like the most decadently rich and silky dark chocolate mousse, made with the best cocoa beans money can buy. There is a heavy focus on natural, seasonal ingredients and classic techniques, and they proudly describe their product as being artisanal and imperfect; each batch tastes just slightly different, but is always undeniably made with the utmost love and care. We seek the best materials from local farmers, transform them in the most pure and simple way and deliver a gelato that is light and genuine. It becomes downright boggling however when you consider how light, smooth, and creamy this tastes. The flavours here are unrivalled in their clarity, and really challenged my perceptions on how gelato and sorbets can taste. As the choices are quite straightforward, it's suggested you mix two — and, with the 'one scoop with two flavours' option only costing 50 cents extra, there's really no excuse not to. It tasted like expensive butter and burnt sugar, which combined with the milky base, made for a very luxurious caramel flavour indeed. Don't have a profile? Home: Products. Respected raw products are used, including milk from Barambah Organics to make the fior di latte flavour a type of mozzarella the best I have had, and Pepe Saya butter to make the salted caramel. Mapo is small-batched, keeping it freshly churned on higher rotation. Aside from a few stalwarts, the menu largely consists of a constantly rotating selection of seasonal flavours, and will always include a handful of sorbets in the dozen or so offerings.
