This raises the question: why was the third Targaryen king remembered as the proverbial tyrant in Game of Thrones? Aenys was always regarded as the heir apparent although he was quite frail, whereas Maegor was a skilled swordsman from a young age. Visenya gifted him the Valyrian steel sword, Dark Sister , and Aegon knighted him at the age of sixteen the youngest at that time. When Aegon died in 37 AC, Aenys ascended the throne. Shortly after, a series of rebellions took place, one of which Maegor himself crushed.

George R. Martin created an extensive history for his fictional world that inspired Game of Thrones. Throughout the story, the history is referenced, making it feel as real as a world with dragons can. And in the years since, the history has become its own story. Many Game of Thrones projects are in the works , including the story of the first Targaryen King, Aegon the Conqueror. As the history of Westeros makes it to screens, there are many moments worth seeing as the country faced many conflicts, but one that hasn't been discussed is the story of Maegor the Cruel. Westeros has no shortage of terrible kings. From the Mad King to the indecisive Viserys Paddy Considine , many were ill-prepared to rule, but Maegor Targaryen far outweighed the rest. Only the third king after the conquering, Maegor was the first example of a terrible king, and that fact has echoed through generations. No ruler has reached his level of hate, and he is the first example called on whenever a ruler displeases the population. House of the Dragon parallels Maegor's end, and later in the story, there are more direct references. As the world is fleshed out, this important historical figure deserves to appear on the screen. The franchise has proven that even the mad Targaryens can be more than the villains they appear, and Maegor's vague story could become one of the more fascinating. Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

Shortly after, a series of rebellions took place, one of which Maegor himself crushed. In 44 AC, maegor the cruel, the High Septon who initiated the uprising suddenly died - many suspect he was poisoned by Maegor's agents others claim he was killed on the orders of either Lord Donnel Hightower or the Citadel before he could provoke Maegor to destroy Oldtown. But his reign was far from peaceful.

Maegor was the only son of Aegon the Conqueror by his sister-wife Visenya and the half-brother of Aenys I. Unlike his half-brother, Maegor was more like his father and grew up to become a strong warrior, being knighted by his father at age sixteen, the youngest at the time; even before then, Maegor was besting knights much older than he was. His mother gave him Dark Sister upon his knighthood. Unlike his brother, he refused to bond with any dragon other than Balerion , as he considered the Black Dread as the only dragon worthy of him, and waited for his father to die to bond with the beast. He intended to marry his niece Rhaena Targaryen, only for the High Septon to propose his niece Ceryse Hightower instead, but the marriage proved to be infertile, this caused him to seek other brides. Upon his half-brother Aenys' ascension to the Iron Throne, the Faith of the Seven launched a major uprising against the Targaryen dynasty.

The Targaryens had incestuously married brother to sister for generations whenever possible to "keep the bloodline pure", in the custom of their Valyrian ancestors. For that matter, Aegon I broke not only the Faith's rules against incest, but its rules against polygamy , as he was married to both of his sisters at the same time. The Faith wasn't in much position to challenge the victorious Targaryen army after the Conquest, or their massive dragons , but Aegon I was wise enough to tread lightly with the Faith: both sides tacitly agreed that the Targaryens' incestuous marriages were a relic of their past, which would soon fade. Aegon I didn't intend for future generations of his new dynasty to continue to have incestuous marriages, and in return, the Faith didn't press the matter for the remainder of his life. Aegon I eventually died and was succeeded by his elder son, Aenys. To the surprise of all, however, later in his reign King Aenys tactlessly wed his daughter to his own son: the incestuous marriage of Princess Rhaena and Prince Aegon broke the Targaryens' prior promise to the Faith, which could stand the abomination no longer. The new High Septon led the denunciation of the Targaryens, and the military order of the Faith of the Seven, the Faith Militant , rose up in open revolt.

While Blackfyre was Aegon the Conqueror's sword, his older sister and wife, Visenya Targaryen wielded the slender blade known as Dark Sister. He used it during the First Dornish War as well. Despite Aegon's swordsmanship, Visenya felt his guards weren't enough to protect him from the perils of sitting in the most dangerous seat in the Seven Kingdoms - the Iron Throne. After a failed assassination attempt on Aegon and Visenya's lives in 10 AC, the latter demonstrated the danger the Dornish War had placed them in with the help of her longsword. She managed to slash Aegon's cheek before any of his guards had the chance to respond, and following this, he entrusted her with the responsibility of forming the Order of the Kingsguard. Aegon the Conqueror had two sons from his two Queens. While Rhaenys' Aenys was the eldest and thus the heir to the throne, Visenya's Maegor was the younger one. Visenya presented her Valyrian steel longsword to Maegor in 25 AC.

It doesn't seem that he outright enjoyed inflicting torment on random people as the later Joffrey Baratheon did , but he would cruelly punish anyone who opposed him - and as his reign of terror spiraled out of control, his wrath led him to crush his subjects over minor slights or failures.
